
Penguins Fall 5-1 on Saturday as Panthers Salvage Series Finale

Franklin, Wis. -- Milwaukee salvaged the finale of a three-game Horizon League series with a 5-1 win over the Youngstown State baseball team on Saturday afternoon at Franklin Field.
The Panthers jumped ahead 4-0 with three runs in the bottom of the first inning and a single tally in the bottom of the second. Milwaukee extended its lead to 5-0 with another single run in the bottom of the sixth before YSU pushed across a run in the top of the seventh to produce the final margin.
Milwaukee starter Riley Peterson allowed one run on two hits with nine strikeouts over seven innings on the mound to earn his second win of the season. Peterson retired the first 14 batters he faced before Brayden Kuriger's two-out single in the top of the fifth inning. The second and final hit allowed by the left-hander was a one-out single by Luke Rossi in the top of the seventh.
YSU starter Brandon Mikos suffered the loss after surrendering five runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks over 5.2 innings. Jake Ferretti and Luke Zmolik did not allow a hit over a combined 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
The Panthers took an early lead with three runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning. Grant Ross hit a leadoff single and came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Dominic Kibler before back-to-back, two-out RBI doubles from Bradyn Horn and Charlie Marion gave Milwaukee a 3-0 edge.
The Panthers pushed their lead to 4-0 with a single run in the home half of the second inning. Christian Holmes reached with a one-out single and was able to race home on a throwing error following Tate Schmidt's two-out infield single.
Milwaukee plated another single run in the bottom of the sixth to increase its lead to 5-0. Marion hit a one-out double and scored on a two-out RBI single by Joey Spence.
The Penguins got on the scoreboard with one run in the top of the seventh inning. Nathan Beckley reached on a fielder's choice and scored from third when Ryan Schummer drew a bases-loaded walk to trim Milwaukee's lead to 5-1.
The Penguins will return to non-league play on Wednesday with a midweek contest at Pitt. First pitch at Charles L. Cost Field in Pittsburgh is scheduled for 6 p.m.
