Penguins Travel to Toledo Tuesday, Host Rockets Wednesday in First Game at New-Look 717 Credit Union Field at Eastwood

The Youngstown State baseball team (8-30, 6-9 HL) will play a pair of midweek non-league games against Toledo (17-22, 13-8 MAC) on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Penguins will travel to Toledo on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. first pitch before hosting the Rockets on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the newly-renovated 717 Credit Union Field at Eastwood.

A Glimpse at the Guins

  • Redshirt freshman right-hander Kale Wemer is scheduled to make his first start as a Penguin at Toledo on Tuesday. The Crawfordsville, Ind., native owns a 3.26 ERA and 12 strikeouts in 19.1 innings pitched over 10 relief appearances this season. Wemer redshirted at Purdue as a true freshman in 2025.
  • Redshirt sophomore right-hander Aidan Dorsch is slated to make his third start as a Penguin against the Rockets on Wednesday. The Eureka, Calif., native has logged 8.2 innings over seven appearances and two starts this season.
  • The Penguins have won three straight games after earning the three-game Horizon League series sweep at Oakland this past weekend. YSU held on for a 13-12 victory in game one of a doubleheader to open the series on Friday before collecting the series win with a 16-2 triumph in seven innings game two of the twin bill. YSU picked up its first series sweep since winning three contests at Purdue Fort Wayne on May 5-7, 2023. The Penguins recorded their two highest scoring outputs of the 2026 season with 13 runs and 15 hits in Friday's series opener at Oakland followed by seasons highs of 16 runs and 17 hits in game two of the doubleheader sweep.
  • Youngstown State earned its first Horizon League series win of the season after taking two of three games at Milwaukee on April 3-4. The Penguins swept a doubleheader with wins of 5-3 and 7-4 on April 3 before dropping a 5-1 decision in the series finale on April 4. YSU earned a 6-5 comeback victory over Oakland in its Horizon League opener on March 13 at Pullman Park in Butler, Pa.
  • Wednesday's game against Toledo will mark YSU's first contest at the newly-renovated 717 Credit Union Field at Eastwood in Niles, Ohio. The field's original surface was grass, which stood for 27 years. The entire infield and outfield are all outfitted with turf after major renovations over the winter and spring. Youngstown State shares 717 Credit Union Field at Eastwood with the Mahoning Valley Scrappers of the MLB Draft League.
  • Youngstown State and Toledo split a pair of meetings during the 2025 season. The Penguins won a 13-3 decision in seven innings at home on April 1 of last year before falling 12-1 in seven innings at Toledo on May 7. The Rockets had won four straight games in the series before YSU's 13-3 seven-inning victory last season at 717 Credit Union Field at Eastwood. It marked YSU's first victory in the series since a 5-3 home triumph on April 10, 2019.
  • Senior left-hander Braden Gebhardt was named the Under Armour Horizon League Pitcher of the Week for the fourth time in 2026 on Monday. The Howland, Ohio, native allowed two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings to earn his third win of the season in YSU's 16-2 victory at Oakland in game two of a doubleheader on Friday. He retired the first 13 batters he faced while sitting down the Golden Grizzlies in order in four different innings. Gebhardt, who was named to the College Baseball Foundation 2026 National Pitcher of the Year Watch List in March, was named the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week three times in as many weeks to begin the 2026 season.
  • Gebhardt earned his third consecutive weekly league honor after posting a career-high 12 strikeouts over seven scoreless innings on the mound in YSU's 2-1 series-opening win at Longwood on Feb. 27. He allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts over six innings to earn his second victory of the season in YSU's 5-3 series-opening win at Milwaukee on April 3. Gebhardt did not allow an earned run while scattering three hits and fanning seven batters over six innings to earn his first win of the season in YSU's 3-2 series-opening victory at Georgetown on March 20. The senior allowed his first earned run of the 2026 season during his 30th inning of work in his fifth start against Oakland on March 13.
  • Through games completed on April 19, Gebhardt leads the Horizon League while ranking 29th nationally with 74 strikeouts and 12th in the country with 10 games started. He also paces the league in ERA (2.21), innings pitched (61.0), WHIP (1.05) and walks allowed per nine innings (2.36) heading into the week. Gebhardt ranks 33rd nationally in ERA while ranking second in the league in hits allowed per nine innings (7.08). The senior southpaw became just the ninth pitcher in YSU history to reach 200 career strikeouts in the series opener with Wright State on April 10. He currently ranks seventh in program history with 210 career strikeouts, and he ranks 12th in school history with 220.0 career innings pitched.
  • Redshirt junior outfielder Brady Shannon leads the Horizon League with 11 home runs while also ranking fourth in the league with a .552 slugging percentage. The Youngstown, Ohio, native leads YSU with 11 homers, 25 runs scored, 24 RBIs and 64 total bases. Shannon went 4-for-5 with two home runs, a double and four RBIs in the series opener at NKU on March 27. Shannon currently ranks tied for 10th in YSU history with 21 career home runs. The redshirt junior has also become the first player in program history to hit at least 10 homers in two different seasons.
  • Redshirt junior utility player Nathan Beckley has now hit safely in 18 of his last 23 games after putting together a nine-game hitting streak from March 14-28. The Aliso Viejo, Calif., native is batting .307 and slugging .504 while leading the Penguins in hits (39), doubles (12), triples (2), walks (17) and total bases (64). Beckley ranks second in the Horizon League with 12 doubles, third with two triples, eighth with a .307 batting average, eighth with 17 walks, eighth in OPS (.907), 10th in hits (39) and 10th in slugging (.504).
  • Beckley batted .471 and slugged .706 with eight hits including four doubles and five RBIs over five games played this past week while helping lead the Penguins to the Horizon League series sweep at Oakland. The redshirt junior utility player also recorded seven runs scored, 12 total bases, one walk, a .526 on-base percentage and one stolen base for the week. Beckley went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored in YSU's 13-12 win in game one of a doubleheader at Oakland on Friday. He followed that by going 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs in YSU's 16-2 victory in game two of Friday's doubleheader. Beckley also went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and a stolen base in YSU's 6-4 win in the series finale at Oakland on Saturday.
  • Senior right-hander Jack Messmore ranks fourth in the Horizon League in innings pitched (48.1), fifth in ERA (5.96) and eighth in strikeouts (30). The first-year transfer from New Mexico scattered six hits and struck out five batters over 6.1 scoreless innings in game one of a doubleheader at Auburn on Feb. 14 in his YSU debut. Messmore recorded a season-high six strikeouts in his fifth start of the season against Oakland on March 14. The senior earned his first win of the season after allowing four runs and fanning three batters while matching his season high of 6.1 innings pitched in YSU's 7-4 win at Milwaukee on April 3. Messmore also hit a home run in his first plate appearance of the season while serving as the designated hitter in the series opener with Wright State on April 10.
  • Freshman infielder Alex Jang is batting .284 and slugging .440 over 35 games played and 31 starts. The Las Vegas, Nev., native has hit safely in 16 of his last 23 games while putting together a five-game hitting streak from March 21-27. Jang recorded a career-high three hits including his first-career home run and a double in the series finale at Longwood on March 1. He matched his career high with three hits at Eastern Michigan on March 24 before going 2-for-5 with a two-run home run at Pitt on March 25. Jang also went 3-for-5 with his first career triple in the series opener at Milwaukee on April 3. He finished 2-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored in YSU's 16-2 win at Oakland on Friday.
  • Youngstown State's pitching staff ranks second in the Horizon League with a 6.91 team ERA and 262 strikeouts ahead of Tuesday's contest at Toledo. YSU pitchers had also allowed the second-fewest total runs and earned runs in the league heading into the week of action. Offensively, the Penguins rank second in the Horizon League with 64 doubles.
  • YSU recorded eight stolen bases as a team in a 6-5 league-opening victory over Oakland at Pullman Park on March 13. The eight steals were the program's most since the Penguins tied the single-game school record with nine steals against Toledo on April 10, 2019. The series opener with the Golden Grizzlies marked just the fifth time in school history that YSU swiped at least eight bases in a game. The Penguins currently rank third in the Horizon League with 49 stolen bases as a team in 2026. Freshman infielder Misael Uriepero ranks sixth in the league with a team-high 10 steals.
  • The Penguins have been hit hard by injuries to key position players throughout the 2026 season. Fifth-year senior outfielder Kendal Spencer started each of YSU's first 17 games before suffering a season-ending injury vs. Oakland on March 15. Sophomore infielder Jay Wrona, who was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team in 2025, played in just six games before being shut down due to injury. Sophomore catcher Caleb Hadley played in 10 games before also being lost for the season due to injury. Redshirt junior infielder Luke Rossi has missed 13 games due to injury, senior outfielder Brayden Kuriger has missed the last nine contests and redshirt freshman infielder Nick Miscavage has missed a total of 25 games.
  • Youngstown State is under the direction of second-year head coach Trevor Charpie. In Charpie's first season guiding the program in 2025, the Penguins finished with a 15-42 overall record and an 11-19 mark in Horizon League play to finish fourth in the league standings. There are 38 players on YSU's roster in 2026, and 17 of them were with the program last year. The Penguins returned 15 letterwinners from last year's team and have 21 newcomers to the roster.

  • Toledo enters the with a 17-22 overall record and a 13-8 mark in Mid-American Conference play after dropping two of three conference home games to Miami Ohio this past weekend. Toledo's 20-4 win in seven innings in the series finale with the Redhawks on Sunday snapped a five-game losing streak for the Rockets.
  • Redshirt junior infielder Troy Sudbrook is batting .375 and slugging .722 while leading Toledo with 54 hits, 22 doubles, eight home runs and 53 RBIs. Junior outfielder Cade Baker is batting .325 and slugging .482 with 17 doubles, three home runs and 19 RBIs. The Rockets rank second in the MAC with a .294 team batting average while leading the conference in hits and doubles.
  • Sophomore right-hander Braden Curry and redshirt freshman right-hander Nate Langbehn have each made a team-high 15 appearances, all of which have come out of the bullpen. Langbehn leads the Rockets with three saves while ranking third on the team with 45 strikeouts in 28.1 innings pitched. Redshirt freshman right-hander Michael Fliss ranks second on the team with 46 strikeouts in 35.2 innings over 14 appearances and five starts. Toledo ranks fifth in the MAC with a 6.05 team ERA while ranking second in the conference with 352 strikeouts.
  • Toledo was picked fourth in the 2026 MAC Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll after finishing at 32-29 overall and 17-13 in MAC play in 2025.

Recapping Last Series

at Oakland – Friday, April 17 - Game 1 // W, 13-12

  • Youngstown State erupted offensively with 13 runs and 15 hits en route to a 13-12 victory over Oakland in a high-scoring Horizon League series opener on Friday afternoon at the Oakland Baseball Field.
  • The Penguins held leads of 4-0 and 5-2 before the Golden Grizzlies evened the score at five runs apiece after two innings. YSU scored eight times over the next three frames to build a 13-6 advantage before Oakland used a five-run sixth inning to pull within 13-11.
  • Oakland shaved YSU's lead to 13-12 with a single tally in the bottom of the eighth inning. A one-out walk, an error and a single loaded the bases before YSU reliever Tyler Heflin handed the ball to freshman left-hander Bryce Palms out of the bullpen. Pinch runner Sam Grifffith scored from third on a balk before Palms struck out two straight batters to preserve a one-run lead headed to the ninth inning. After walking the leadoff batter in the bottom of the ninth, Palms proceeded to induce a 4-6-3 double play and a flyout to end the game and earn his first career save.
  • Heflin was awarded the win after allowing six runs on seven hits with five strikeouts over 3.2 innings of relief. YSU starter Jack Messmore also surrendered six runs on seven hits over 3.2 innings on the mound.
  • Nathan Beckley and Luke Rossi each had three hits and scored three times apiece to pace five Penguins with multiple hits in the contest. Misael Uriepero went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored while Teddy Ruffner and Brady Shannon each added two hits and two RBIs.

at Oakland – Friday, April 17 - Game 2 // W, 16-2 (7 innings)

  • Youngstown State scored the first 11 runs of the game to support another stellar starting pitching performance from Braden Gebhardt in a 16-2 victory in seven innings over Oakland in game two of Friday's doubleheader at the Oakland Baseball Field.
  • YSU went in front on a solo homer from Rossi in the top of the first inning before pushing its lead to 6-0 with five runs in the second. The Penguins pushed across five more runs in the fourth before the Golden Grizzlies scored their first run in the fifth. YSU added two runs in the sixth and three tallies in the seventh to pull away for the doubleheader sweep.
  • Gebhardt allowed two runs on six hits while striking out eight batters over 6.1 innings to earn his third victory of the season. The senior left-hander retired the first 13 batters he faced before Griffith's one-out single in the top of the fifth inning. Gebhardt moved into seventh on YSU's career strikeout list on Friday by pushing his career total to 210.
  • Youngstown State followed its high-scoring performance in the series opener by setting new season highs with 16 runs and 17 hits in game two. Rossi and Shannon each went yard while Beckley doubled twice and drove in three runs. YSU had 11 different players record a hit in the victory while six different Penguins had multiple hits.

at Oakland – Saturday, April 18 // W, 6-4

  • Youngstown State completed the Horizon League series sweep with a 6-4 victory over Oakland on Saturday afternoon in the series finale at the Oakland Baseball Field.
  • Oakland scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning before YSU scored twice in the second and twice in the third to lead 4-1. The Penguins held a 5-2 edge before the Golden Grizzlies scored a pair of runs in the home half of the fifth to shave YSU's lead to 5-4. Youngstown State plated the final run of the contest in the top of the sixth inning and held on to win its third straight game.
  • After winning both games of a doubleheader with the Golden Grizzlies on Friday, the Penguins completed the three-game series sweep on Saturday to improve to 6-9 in Horizon League play. Oakland dropped to 5-10 in league competition following its loss on Saturday.
  • Luke Zmolik retired the first eight batters he faced after taking over for Brandon Mikos on the mound in the bottom of the fifth inning. Zmolik, the fifth-year senior right-hander, struck out Jack Lux to end the bottom of the fifth before sitting the Golden Grizzlies down in order in both the sixth and seventh innings. The Monroe, Wash., native worked around a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth to earn his first win of the season.
  • Zmolik posted new seasons highs with six strikeouts and 4.1 innings pitched while scattering two hits. Mikos allowed four runs on eight hits with five strikeouts and three walks over 4.2 innings on the mound in his sixth start of the season.
  • Garrett Cutting finished 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs from the leadoff spot to pace three Penguins with multiple hits in the contest. Nathan Beckley and Alex Jang added two hits apiece while Chyran Humphries recorded an RBI single, a walk and a run scored.

Youngstown State will continue a five-game stretch of non-league games with a three-game series at former Horizon League rival UIC on April 24-26. The Penguins and Flams are scheduled to open the series on Friday at noon ET at Curtis Granderson Field in Chicago.
