Sweetman Named Women's Swimmer of the Meet, Men Secure Highest Finish Ever to Wrap up HLCs

Indianapolis, Ind. – Olivia Sweetman wrapped up her storybook meet with the most prestigious individual honor, while Hannah Murray etched her name in YSU lore on the final day of the Horizon League Championships inside the IU Natatorium.

Sweetman won her third individual event title of the week when she opened up Saturday's finals with a bang, securing the 1650 free title with a time of 16:46.26. She became the first Penguins swimmer, male or female, to win three event titles at the same Horizon League meet. Derin Donmez finished 11th in the event with a time of 17:32.88, while Nehir Guler finished 16th with a time of 18:05.39, and Amelia Matzke placed 19th, clocking a time of 18:52.36.

Poyraz San Askin led the Penguin men in their 1650 free section with a ninth-place finish, clocking a time of 15:47.01. He was followed by Seif Elbatal, who finished 12th with a time of 16:04.13, and Ethan Woycehoski, who placed 19th with a time of 16:17.24. Also competing in the event were Quinn Harman, who clocked a time of 16:34.70, and David Grant, who swam a time of 16:54.68.

Hannah Murray became the first YSU female swimmer to claim victory in the 200 breaststroke as she finished first with a time of 2:17.61. Morgan Glass finished 11th with a time of 2:23.15, while Helen Bernardi placed 13th with a time of 2:24.96.

Adrian Andres Moreno led the Penguin men in the 200 breaststroke as he placed third with a time of 1:56.02. James Slessor finished seventh with a time of 1:58.87, while Dominic Panozzo finished 16th with a time of 2:05.44.

Orla Maccines finished runner-up in the women's 200 fly with a strong time of 2:03.08, while fellow 'Guin Allison Ramirez Romero was the third-place finisher with a time of 2:03.77.

Quinn Cynor also claimed a runner-up finish for the YSU men in the 200 fly, clocking a time of 1:45.96. Valer Kennedy had an impressive race, finishing fourth with a time of 1:46.86, while Lorenz Beck finished 11th with a time of 1:48.39.

Zachary Lao finished fourth in the men's three-meter diving event, scoring 308.10. Rafael Serey-Cormier finished sixth with a score of 279.75.

Pablo Santos had a strong fifth-place finish in the men's 200 backstroke as he swam a time of 1:46.18. Lara Lilic placed eighth in the women's 200 backstroke, clocking a time of 2:03.92.

Jacob Gramer finished seventh in the men's 100 free with a time of 44.33, while Noah Smith finished 14th with a time of 45.02. Chloe Moore placed 10th in the women's 100 free with a time of 51.75.

Saturday evening's events were wrapped up with the 400-free relays. During the women's section, YSU's squad of Olivia Sweetman, Hannah Murray, Orla Maccines, and Chloe Moore finished fourth with a collective time of 3:26.18, while the men's team of Quinn Cynor, Jacob Gramer, Lorenz Beck, and Noah Smith finished fifth with a time of 2:55.62.

Olivia Sweetman was named the Horizon League Women's Swimmer of the Meet, wrapping up her historic week in thrilling fashion. She becomes the second Penguin to ever win the award, following Miriam Frass, who took home the honor last year.

The Penguin men finished third overall, their highest finish ever, while amassing 494 total points, which is a new program record at the league championships. The previous record was 426 points, which was accomplished in 2023.

The YSU women finished fifth overall with 430 total points.

The Penguins will continue their postseason journey in a few weeks, as divers will compete at the NCAA Diving Zones, Mar. 10-12, and swimmers will move on to the CSCAA National Invitational Championships, slated for Mar. 12-14.
