Penguins Sweep 500 Free Individual Titles on Day 2 of the Horizon League Championships

Indianapolis, Ind. – The Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs made history on Day 2 of the Horizon League Championships, capturing two individual titles.

The 500 free was one to remember for both the men and the women as YSU swept tiles in the event on the men's and women's sides, an event that YSU had never won a conference title in coming into this season.

Olivia Sweetman finished first in the women's event with a time of 4:49.29, almost four seconds faster than the second-place time. She became just the fourth female swimmer to win a Horizon League individual title in program history. Derin Donmez placed 10th with a time of 5:00.93, while Lara Lilic finished 12th, clocking a time of 5:01.51.

Quinn Cynor claimed the men's 500 free title with a time of 4:20.78. He became just the third men's swimmer in program history to win a Horizon League individual title. Valer Kennedy finished 15th in the event with a time of 4:35.95.

Hannah Murray notched a third-place finish in the women's 200 IM with a time of 2:02.69, while James Slessor finished 12th in the men's 200 IM, clocking a time of 1:50.37.

Rafael Serey-Cormier placed fourth in the men's one-meter dive in his Horizon League Championships debut with a score of 283.00. Zachary Lao finished seventh, scoring 259.65, while Ben Edwardson finished 10th (235.45), Andrew Miller finished 12th (217.90), and Jude Carlton placed 14th (136.00).

Jacob Gramer led the YSU men in the 50 free with a fifth-place finish, clocking a time of 20.01, while Noah Smith finished 12th with a time of 20.20. Chloe Moore led the Penguin women with an eighth-place finish in the 50 free, swimming a time of 23.67.

The men's 200-free relay team of Noah Smith, Jacob Gramer, Lorenz Beck, and Reid Withey finished fourth with a collective time of 1:19.45, while the women's 200-free relay squad of Madelyn Mahoney, Orla Maccines, Hannah Murray, and Chloe Moore finished fifth, swimming a time of 1:34.99.

The Penguins will be back in action tomorrow for the second day of competition in Indianapolis. Swimming prelims will begin at 10:00 a.m., while diving prelims will take place at 1:00 p.m., and the finals for swimming and diving will start at 5:30 p.m. All action will be broadcast on ESPN+.
