Spartanburg, S.C. – The Youngstown State softball team scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on for a 9-7 win over West Georgia on day two of the Wings, Ect. Classic at Cyrill Softball Stadium. The Penguins fell to USC Upstate, 2-0, in game two on Saturday.
Lydia Wilkerson went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Emma Gilkerson was 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBIs and Bree Kohler went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Penguins, who improve 3-6.
Gilkerson belted a three-run home run, her fourth home run of the season, to give the Penguins a 3-0 lead in the top of third inning. Macy Littler and Wilkerson each reached on errors and Gilkerson delivered the first pitch she saw over the center-field fence.
The Wolves scored one run in the third and two runs in the third to tie the game at 3-3 through three complete innings.
The Penguins regained a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth after Wilkerson scored on a two-out wild pitch. Wilkerson and Gilkerson each singled and moved into scoring position on Selah Moyer's ground out.
West Georgia reclaimed a 5-4 advantage after posting two runs in the bottom of the frame.
Wilkerson led off the seventh with a double to left field and advanced to third on Moyer's fielder's choice. Tai Turner and Kennedy Dean each posted run-scoring singles to tie the game and give the Penguins a 6-5 advantage.
Kohler's two-out, bases-loaded double to left field plated Turner and Dean, and Ayla Ray, who singled, scored the Penguins' fifth run of the inning on a wild pitch.
West Georgia scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom half of the seventh inning, and sophomore pitcher Kelsey Ogin picked up her second win of the year.
In the nightcap, the Penguins tallied just five hits, all singles by Macy Littler, Wilkerson, Gilkerson, Dean and Kohler. Sophomore pitcher Isabella O'Brien was the hard-luck loser in the circle allowing just five hits in a complete-game effort.
Youngstown State is idle next week then heads to Farmville, Va., for five games at the Longwood Tournament, Feb. 27-March 1.
