Terre Haute, Ind. – The No. 8 Youngstown State football team looked dominant in a 57-24 win over Indiana State at Memorial Stadium in Terre Haute on Saturday afternoon.
The Penguins improve to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the MVFC while the Sycamores drop to 2-5 and 0-3 in the league.
YSU's offense had an all-around impressive afternoon led by QB Beau Brungard. Brungard threw for a career-high 386 yards completing 25-of-34 passes with three touchdowns. He rushed for just 37 yards and two scores, but became the YSU all-time school record holder for career rushing scores in the game with 56 in his career. He broke the previous record of 55 held by running back Adrian Brown.
YSU trailed 7-0 as Indiana State took the opening kickoff and jumped out to touchdown lead 1:24 into the contest.
The Guins then struck for two scores on the legs of Jaden Gilbert. Gilbert scored on a 14-yard tote to tie the game before busting a 65-yard run which put YSU in front 15-7 after a two-point conversion keeper by Brungard.
Indiana State pulled within 15-10 at the end of the first quarter on a field goal by Sebastian Lopez.
YSU erupted for 21 second-quarter points. Brungard gave YSU a 22-10 lead with a one-yard keeper inside the left pylon. However, ISU answered back with a 25-yard scoring toss from Brady Allen to Torey French making it a 22-17 contest.
Gilbert's third rushing touchdown of the first half on the ensuing drive made it a 29-17 contest and Brungard found Lynn Wyche-El for a 36-yard touchdown at the 3:14 mark of the second stanza made it 36-17. It was the seventh straight game that Wyche-El scored a touchdown and was his sixth TD reception of the campaign.
On the first play from scrimmage of the second half, Brungard tossed a 75-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Hunt and just 10 seconds into the period the lead increased to 43-17.
The Sycamores found the end zone for the final time of the game on the next possession to make the score 43-24. Brungard's third scoring toss of the game went to Jeremiah Sanders, a 16-yarder at 9:19 of the third quarter.
In the fourth, Brungard connected on a 38-yard pass to tight end Alex McDonald who was tackled at the one-yard line. On the next play, Brungard scored from a yard out to set the school mark for career rushing TDs.
