Householder Hits Two Major Milestones, Penguins Win Twice at SFU

Loretto, Pa. — Senior outside hitter Abbie Householder eclipsed 1,000 career kills and digs, and Youngstown State's volleyball team beat Saint Francis (Pa.) and Siena on Saturday at the Altoona Grand Red Flash Classic.

The Penguins swept the Red Flash in the morning, and Householder reached both milestones in a five-set win over the Saints in the evening. The Canfield, Ohio, native is the sixth player in school history to record at least 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs, joining Jill Raslevich (1992-95), Heather Luben (1993-96), Amy Herman (1994-98), Vickie Robinson (1996-99) and Lexi Egler (2011-14). Egler is the only other player to do it in the rally scoring era. Householder is the 15th Penguin to reach 1,000 kills, and she is the 18th to get to 1,000 digs.

While Householder provided standout performances, two of her freshman teammates also delivered and were named to the all-tournament team. Layne Graffice had a pair of double-doubles on Saturday, finishing with 10 kills and 10 digs against SFU and 13 kills and 10 digs versus Siena. Habeeb posted six aces and 10 digs in the morning, and she followed that with 24 digs in the evening.

Against Saint Francis, the Penguins had a big serving advantage with nine aces and two errors while allowing five aces and benefitting from 11 errors by their opponents. The Penguins won 25-20, 25-22, 25-22.

YSU trailed the host Red Flash 19-18 in the opening set but scored seven of the final eight points to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Gabriela Machin had two kills, Niyah Lester was part of two blocks, and Kameron Blizniak had a kill during a five-point burst that gave the Penguins a 23-19 edge.

Graffice and Householder combined for seven kills in 18 attempts in the second set, and Habeeb had two aces during a 10-1 run that flipped a 15-12 deficit into a 22-16 lead. Graffice added five kills and eight digs in the third set, which featured a 9-1 run behind two aces from Habeeb.

Against Siena, Householder had 17 kills and 14 digs, and the Penguins hit .293 as a team for the five-set win. The set scores were 25-19, 24-26, 20-25, 25-10, 15-9.

Graffice had four kills while Taya Nordmann posted five of her 11 blocks in the opening set, and Householder started heating up in the second set with six kills despite the Penguins losing 26-24. Householder surpassed 1,000 career kills in the third set, and her 1,000th dig came in the fourth during a set in which the Penguins had seven blocks and forced the Saints to hit negative .154.

With the momentum in their favor following a 25-10 win in the fourth set, YSU scored the first four points of the fifth and held the upper hand the rest of the match. The Penguins had 10 kills and just one error in 18 attempts, and Machin had four of her 15 kills in the fifth set.

The Penguins will play three matches over three days at the College of Charleston next weekend.
