The Youngstown State men's and women's cross-country teams achieved a clean sweep of this week's #HLXC weekly awards, the Horizon League announced Tuesday.
Redshirt-Freshman Patrick Burgos was named both the Horizon League Men's Runner of the Week, as well as the Horizon League Men's Freshman of the Week, after a very impressive at last weekend's YSU Invitational Cross Country Meet. Burgos finished in first place in the Men's 8K with a new Gorby Family Championship Cross Country Course record time of 25:18.7, over 19 seconds quicker than second place. The Penguins men also finished first overall as a team.
Junior McKinley Fielding was named the Horizon League Women's Runner of the Week after she also had an eye-popping performance this past weekend. Fielding, also a first-place finisher in the Women's 5K, set a new Gorby Family Championship Cross Country Course record with a time of 17:35.5. She led the Penguins women to a runner-up finish as a team.
Freshman Maggie Hopple was named the Horizon League Women's Freshman of the Week after a 10th-place finish in last weekend's Women's 5K, clocking a time of 19:04.6.
The Penguins will be back in action this Friday when they make the trip to South Bend, Ind. for the Joe Piane Notre Dame Cross Country Invitational at Burke Golf Course. The men are currently scheduled to race in the prestigious Blue Race at 11:15 a.m., while the women will compete in the Gold Race at 2:15 p.m.
