Stokes Posts First Double-Double in Four-Set Loss to Phoenix

Green Bay, Wis. — Youngstown State's volleyball team battled Green Bay to 35-33 in the fourth set on Saturday before falling in its second consecutive four-set match. The set scores from the Kress Center were 25-16, 15-25, 25-11, 35-33.

Presley Stokes led YSU with career highs of 18 kills and 13 digs for her first career double-double, while two teammates also had double-doubles. Abbie Householder finished with 17 kills and 11 digs, while Kameron Blizniak posted 35 assists and 12 digs.

Diane Pichelman had another strong effort for the Phoenix with 22 kills on 46 attempts, and Green Bay outhit the Penguins .313 to .186 in the match.

The first three sets were lopsided as Green Bay built a 2-1 lead, but there were 14 ties and eight lead changes in the fourth set that extended well beyond the typical 25-point set.

Following its 25-11 win in the third, Green Bay scored six of the first seven points of the fourth set to build a 6-1 lead. Youngstown State got within one at 7-6, and the Penguins tied the score at 15-all on a Blizniak ace. YSU took its first lead came at 20-19 on a Stokes kill, and Green Bay went ahead 24-22. The Penguins went on to fight off five match points, and they had four set points before Green Bay scored the final three points of the match.

Householder's 17th kill of the match and ninth of the set gave the Penguins their final set point at 33-32. A serving error gave Green Bay the side out, and Gillian Koning's kill and a Penguin attack error ended the contest.

Youngstown State will host three Horizon League matches at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center next week. The busy stretch on Rosselli Court will begin at 6 p.m. on Tuesday as the Penguins play Robert Morris.
