The Youngstown State football team continued a busy fall camp with a full offense vs. defense scrimmage on Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium.
Both the offense and defense made key plays during the scrimmage that featured game-like situations.
After the defense held the offense on the first two drives of the scrimmage, QB Beau Brungard scored on a nifty 36-yard run to cap off a five-play, 62-yard march. On the drive, Brungard competed two passes for 19 yards while Jaden Gilbert and Tahir Mills added eight-yard runs.
Two drives later, Justin Wimpye intercepted a pass from backup QB Colin Seibert on the first play of a series.
Brungard returned to the field to lead a 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive. Brungard connected with Max Tomczak and Luke Hensley to jump start the drive and pick up 40 yards on three catches. Four Brungard keepers and a seven-yard run by Jaden Gilbert moved the ball to the one-yard line. Following an illegal formation penalty, Mills scored on the nearside from six yards out.
Seibert and Devin Sherwood led an impressive 14-play, 75-yard drive a few possessions later. Sherwood moved the offense to the 27-yard line, highlighted by a 12-yard keeper on fourth down. On third-and-four from the nine-yard line, Seibert found Ky "Flash" Wilson for a touchdown.
The final scoring drive was 75 yards and consisted of just four plays. Brungard had run of 21 yards then Gilbert followed with a 12-yard gain. On the next play, Gilbert slipped through the defense before Brungard found him for a 40-yard gain down to the two-yard line. On the next snap, Antwan Gardner took it in for the touchdown.
For the scrimmage, Brungard was 7-of-13 for 124 yards while Sherwood had five completions for 72 yards and Seibert had seven connections for 62 yards.
On the ground, Brungard had nine carries for 68 yards and a score. Gilbert had five carries for 31 yards, Donald Barksdale came on to rush for 32 yards on six carries and Gardner added 30 yards on four attempts.
