Youngstown State baseball student-athletes Braden Gebhardt and Jacob Gehring have been named to the 2025 Valeo Horizon League Baseball All-Academic Team for their combined performance on the field and in the classroom, the league office announced on Wednesday.
The Penguins had multiple players earn all-academic honors for the sixth consecutive season. At least one Penguin has been named academic all-league in each of the last nine campaigns.
Gebhardt, a junior left-hander, was selected to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for the second straight season. The Howland, Ohio, native maintains a 3.93 GPA as a marketing major at YSU. He also was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team as a sophomore in 2024. Gebhardt has a 2-5 record and two saves with 29 strikeouts in 33 innings pitched over 16 relief appearances and one start on the mound in 2025. In Horizon League play, he has recorded 24 strikeouts in 25 innings pitched over nine relief appearances and one start.
Gehring, a senior right-hander, collects Horizon League All-Academic honors for the first time in his career. The Canfield, Ohio, native maintains a 3.60 GPA as a psychology major at Youngstown State. He ranks in the top 10 in the Horizon League in strikeouts (56), innings pitched (61.1), ERA (6.60) and opponent batting average (.306) over 12 starts on the mound in 2025.
The Horizon League recognizes student-athletes with seasonal Academic All-League Teams in each of its 19 championship sports. To be eligible for Horizon League All-Academic consideration, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher (based on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, having earned 24 semester-hour or 36 quarter-hour credits, and participate in 50 percent of the team's overall contests.
The Penguins will conclude their 2025 regular season with a three-game Horizon League series at Northern Kentucky beginning on Thursday at 3 p.m.
