Youngstown, Ohio – The Youngstown State softball team (11-29, 3-8 Horizon League) scored five runs on two home runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, and sophomore Autumn Behlke fired a complete game to pick up a 7-4 win in game two of a doubleheader against Robert Morris (18-11, 10-3) on Wednesday at the Covelli Sports Complex.
The Penguins dropped game one, 11-3, in five innings.
Behlke, who allowed just four hits, retired 16 straight batters over 5.1 innings, allowed just one earned run, and struck out four to pick up her fifth win of the season. After allowing two hits in the first, Behlke did not allow another run until the top of the seventh inning.
Senior Taylor Truran hit a grand slam and drove in four runs while freshman Kami Diaz went 2-for-3 with a solo home run.
Sophomore Macy Littler went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Lydia Wilkerson had two hits, including a double.
The Penguins jumped out to a 2-0 lead through three innings after Wilkerson's RBI-double in the first and Ayla Ray's run-scoring fielder's choice in the third. Littler, who singled in both frames, scored the Penguins' first two runs.
In the bottom of the fifth, Truran clobbered a towering, two-out grand slam, her fourth home run of the year, to center field to extend the Penguins lead to 6-0. On the next pitch, Diaz hammered her third home run of the season to give the Penguins a 7-0 advantage. Wilkerson and senior Elyssa Imler each had two-out singles to begin the rally, and junior Kennedy Dean walked to load the bases for Truran
The Colonials rallied for four runs, only one earned, one four hits in the top of the seventh inning, but Behlke closed out the game with a ground out.
In the opener, the Penguins tallied just four hits by Littler, Ray, Imler and Truran. Littler, Dean and Truran also drove in the Penguins' runs.
Youngstown State and Robert Morris close out the series Thursday, April 10. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
