Milwaukee, Wis. – Senior Kyle Fossum belted his 17th home run of the season to tie the YSU single-season record, and Brandon Mikos picked up his third victory of the year to lead the Youngstown State baseball team (10-28, 7-11 Horizon League) to a 7-5 series-clinching win over Milwaukee (13-24, 10-7) on Saturday afternoon.
Fossum, who went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, tied the mark set by Andrew Kendrick in 2017.
Mikos (3-1) delivered a quality start scattering six hits over seven innings and striking out five. Mikos also allowed just two earned runs and one walk.
Braden Gebhardt earned his second save of the year after getting the final out of the game.
The Penguins jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Fossum led off the game with a walk and advanced to third on Brayden Kuriger's single to right field. After Kuriger stole second, both runners scored on a wild pitch for the 2-0 advantage.
In the top of the third, Cole Smith delivered a two-out, two-run double down the right-field line to extend the Penguins lead to 4-0. Smith's clutch two-bagger plated Nathan Beckley, who doubled, and Kuriger, who walked.
The Panthers tacked on one run in the bottom half of the third, but Fossum cranked his record-tying home run, a two-run shot, and two pitches later Tommy Rover hit a solo shot to take a 7-1 lead in top of fourth.
Milwaukee added two runs in the bottom half of the fourth to pull within 7-3.
In the ninth, Milwaukee scored twice and had runners on first and third before Gebhardt was called on to replace Mikey Rodrigues. On his first pitch, Milwaukee's Justin Hausser hit a sharp ground ball up the middle, but Garrett Cutting's throw just beat the runner to end the contest. Rodrigues pitched a key 1.2 innings after coming into replace Mikos.
Youngstown State visits Eastern Michigan on Tuesday. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Ypsilanti, Mich.
