The Youngstown State football team closed out the spring with an entertaining Red-White Spring Game on a chilly Saturday morning at Stambaugh Stadium.
The final score was 34-18 with the offense winning. Following the scrimmage, the defense won a punt-catching tiebreaker to win the spring competition.
The defense intercepted three passes while the offense scored nine touchdowns in an action-packed two-hour event. Malachi "Bubba" Lewis had three scoring throws while Beau Brungard added two more.
Intercepting passes were Makai Shahid, Jeremiah Robinson and Jussiah Williams-West. The defense was also credited with nearly 10 TFLs and seven sacks as quarterbacks wore black jerseys and could not be tackled.
The defense made the first big play of the day when Shahid intercepted Beau Brungard in the end zone on the games first possession.
The second drive ended when Brady Shannon was sacked by Chris Sammarone. Shannon later departed to head to Eastwood Field for the YSU baseball game against Northern Kentucky.
The third drive ended when Connor Johannesen sacked Colin Seibert and Andrew Lastovka's 51-yard field-goal attempt was wide right.
The offense found paydirt for the first time when Antuan Gardner scored on a one-yard rush. On the next drive, Williams-West intercepted Lewis.
Lewis rebounded on the ensuing possession as he connected with Larenz Lacking for a five-yard score.
The longest play of the scrimmage came when Brungard connected on a wide-open Kylon Wilson for an 89-yard touchdown toss.
Newcomer Tahir Mills capped off an impressive 14-play, 67-yard scoring drive on a one-yard plunge.
Colin Seibert connected on a 41-yard scoring toss to Anthony Fuline and Brungard found Luke Hensley for a 22-yard score before Robinson prevented another TD with a pick in the end zone.
The offense continued its momentum as Lewis found Jackson Wiley for a 29-yard touchdown, Mekhi Bethel scored on a 28-yard run up the middle before Lewis added a 31-yard touchdown pass to Benjamin Tolble.
