Youngstown, Ohio — Youngstown State sophomore bowler Amanda Granata has qualified to compete at the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Singles Championships next month in Las Vegas.
Granata is the first Penguins bowler to advance as an individual through the sectional round of the Intercollegiate Singles Championships. She emerged in the six-game qualifier at Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich., on Friday to claim the sixth and final spot to go to nationals.
The singles event through the USBC will be held on April 14-19 at the South Point Bowling Plaza, two days after the Final Four of the NCAA Championship will be contested at the Suncoast Bowling Center in Las Vegas.
Granata fired a six-game set of 1,267 to claim the final qualifying spot by two pins. She bowled four games over 200, and her top score was a 267 in game three. She finished the round with scores of 224 and 205.
YSU's Madyson Marx and Kirsten Moore also bowled at Thunderbowl Lanes in the sectionals, and Ellie Drescher nearly qualified at the sectional site held at Cityview Lanes in Fort Worth, Texas.
Drescher finished just 13 pins behind the cut line while posting a 1,271 set. She began the round by striking in her first nine attempts in a 279 game, and she had 720 after three games.
Youngstown State will reassemble as a team to compete at the Music City Classic next weekend at the Smyrna Bowling Center outside of Nashville.
