Box Score 2 Greenville, S.C. — Youngstown State's softball team couldn't keep pace offensively on the opening day of the Furman Round Robin on Friday and dropped a pair of games at Pepsi Stadium.
The Penguins fell 9-1 to Gardner-Webb in the afternoon, and they dropped an 11-1 decision in five innings to the host Paladins in the nightcap.
Bree Kohler was 2-for-3 with a run scored in game one against Gardner-Webb to highlight YSU's offense in the two games.
Against the Runnin' Bulldogs, GWU scored the first six runs of the game to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Araceli Pesqueria hit a two-run homer in the third, and Emily Garcia delivered a two-run double during a three-run fourth.
Serving as the home team on the neutral field, Youngstown State's run came in the bottom of the sixth. Kohler sparked the offense with a one-out infield single, and back-to-back walks to Kennedy Dean and Elyssa Imler allowed the Penguins to load the bases. Reese Campbell-Schaller moved everyone up a base with a single up the middle, but GWU was able to escape without any more damage as an inning-ending double play followed.
The Runnin' Bulldogs added three runs to its lead in the top of the seventh for the final margin.
Ayla Ray and Taylor Truran also had hits for the Penguins in the opener. Maci Boggess was charged with the loss, allowing five earned runs on nine hits over the first four innings.
Furman scored six runs with two outs in the first inning of game two, and Hope Marshburn delivered the big hit with a three-run double from the eighth spot in the lineup.
Youngstown State got a run back in the third as Ashlyn Bishop led off with a single and scored on a two-out double by Cassandra Carlson, but Furman scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 10-1. The Paladins added a run in the fourth for the final tally.
Five Penguins had hits with Macy Littler, Kami Diaz and Kennedy joining Bishop and Carlson.
Autumn Behlke surrendered six runs in the loss, and Kelsey Ogin and Autumn Boyd both pitched in relief.
