Youngstown, Ohio — Youngstown State's Malia Magestro and Haley Thierry have been named to the 2024 Academic All-District® Women's Basketball teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.
The four teams — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA — were announced on Tuesday by CSC. This is Magestro's third straight season to earn Academic All-District accolades, which is the most in program history, while Thierry is a first-time selection. Both student-athletes were seniors for the Penguins in 2024-25.
Magestro finished her career as a three-time academic honoree at both the league and district levels. She finished her undergraduate degree in marketing with a 4.0 GPA, and she has a 3.83 GPA in YSU's MBA program in the digital marketing track.
On the court, Magestro finished up her fifth season as a Penguin averaging career highs of 11.1 points and 2.3 assists per game in 2024-25. She scored at least 300 points for the third consecutive season, and she became the eighth Penguin to average double figures in four straight seasons. The Hermitage, Pa., native finished her time at YSU ranking second in program history in career 3s (212), and she was among the top five in games played, minutes and starts.
Thierry is an academic honoree for the first time in her career as she finishes her time as a student-athlete on campus. She possesses a 3.72 GPA as a multimedia sports broadcasting major.
Thierry averaged 4.9 points, a career-high 5.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists and a steal in her fourth season as a Penguin in 2024-25. She made a career-high 38 free throws while making 77.6% of her attempts from the charity stripe, and she was a big spark plug for the Penguins down the stretch. She averaged 7.1 points over the final 17 games of the season, and she posted 6.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists on average over her final 20 contests.
To be eligible for the Academic All-District® Women's Basketball teams, student-athletes nominees must compete in 90 percent of the institution's games or must start in at least 66 percent of the games. Student-athletes must be at least a sophomore academically or athletically, and they must possess a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5.
