Detroit, Mich. – Freshman Kelsey Ogin fired a complete game, allowed just five hits and struck out a career-high nine to lead the Youngstown State softball team (5-24, 1-5 Horizon League) to a 2-1 victory in eight innings over Detroit Mercy (5-14, 2-1) on Saturday afternoon at Buysse Ballpark.
Junior Kennedy Dean's two-run double in the top of the eighth inning broke the scoreless tie and gave the Penguins a 2-0 advantage. Sophomore Lydia Wilkerson's one out single began the rally, and senior Elyssa Imler's bunt single put runners on first and second. On the first pitch she saw, Dean delivered a line drive to the left-center field gap scoring both pinch-runner Bella Meyer and Imler.
Detroit Mercy cut the lead in half on Wendy Ketola's double to left-center, and, after a fly out and a foul out, the Titans had the winning run on first base.
Ogin, however, induced a fly out to center field to end the game.
Junior Ashlyn Bishop recorded two hits for the Penguins.
Youngstown State hosts Niagara in a doubleheader, Tuesday, March 25. First pitch is at 3 p.m. at the YSU Softball Field.
