Lockport, Ill. — Behind a strong effort across the lineup, Youngstown State's bowling team earned three wins over opponents ranked in the top 10 as the Flyer Classic shifted to traditional play on Saturday.
All five Penguins averaged at least 198.4 over the five matches, and Youngstown State averaged 209.1 as a group. YSU's 5,228 total pinfall on Saturday combined with its 5,177 in Baker play on Friday allowed it to have the fourth-highest total heading into Sunday's bracket.
As the fourth seed in the bracket, Youngstown State will need to go 3-0 on Sunday to win the tournament. YSU will take on North Carolina A&T to begin its bracket run starting at 9:10 a.m. Eastern at Strike & Spare II.
The Penguins began Saturday with a 17-pin victory over second-ranked Vanderbilt as Madison Doseck doubled in the 10th frame from the anchor spot to help seal the win. YSU's lone blemish came in its second match, a 1,054-1,000 loss to No. 6 North Carolina A&T.
Youngstown State started its run of three straight victories by topping Aurora 1,032-898, and it followed with its best set of the day in a 1,113-901 victory over No. 9 Stephen F. Austin. The Penguins closed the round with a 1,011-972 win over No. 10 Maryville.
