Penguins Visit League Leader Cleveland State Sunday on ESPNU

Setting the Scene
The Youngstown State men's basketball team goes for its fourth straight win when it visits Horizon League leader Cleveland State, Sunday, Feb. 16. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. at Wolstein Center, and the game will be televised on ESPNU and aired on 570 WKBN.

Youngstown State hosts Milwaukee in a nationally-televised game on ESPNU, Friday, Feb. 21. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center. The game will also be aired on 570 WKBN. 

Last Time Out
Youngstown State's men's basketball team outscored Purdue Fort Wayne by 20 points in the second half for a convincing 93-71 victory over the Mastodons on Wednesday evening at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center. The Penguins withstood an early three-point barrage that gave Purdue Fort Wayne an early 11-point lead, and they held a two-point lead at halftime. YSU then blew the game open by outpacing the Horizon League's top-scoring team 51-31 in the second half. For the Penguins, Nico Galette was 8-for-11 from the field to score 21 points, and he added 10 rebounds and five assists. Juwan Maxey scored 17 points and matched Galette with three 3s, Jason Nelson scored 14 points, and Cris Carroll scored 12. Gabe Dynes had eight points, seven rebounds and six blocks to anchor the Penguins defensively.

Last Time Against CSU
In the first meeting, Youngstown State trailed by as many as 16 in the second half and cut deficit down to one, but the Penguins could not complete the comeback and fell to Cleveland State, 80-72, on Jan. 11. Carroll led the Penguins with 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor with three 3-pointers while Ty Harper had 16 points and Jason Nelson added 10 points. The Penguins connected on 13 3-pointers, including nine in the second half.

Galette Goin' Crazy
Senior Nico Galette has been a force over the last eight games. Galette has posted five double-doubles during that span. He averaged 13.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. He also dished out 29 assists for an average of 3.6 per game.

Farmer Now in Top 10
After his offensive exploits recently, senior EJ Farmer has moved into seventh place among the 2024-25 Horizon League overall scoring leaders. Farmer, who has reached double figures 18 times, is averaging 15.3 points per game. 
 
To the Max
Junior Juwan Maxey posted two of his best games at Youngstown State last week. Maxey led the Penguins to a 2-0 record last week with a pair of road victories at Oakland (84-75) and Detroit Mercy (87-72). Maxey averaged 20 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game. He shot 55 percent (11-for-20) from the floor, 55.6 percent (10-for-18) from 3-point range, and 100 percent (8-for-8) from the free-throw line. He scored 19 points on 5-of-10 shooting with four 3-pointers against Oakland. He posted 21 points and made a career-high six 3-pointers in the Penguins win over Detroit Mercy. He Maxey added 17 points with three more 3s against Purdue Fort Wayne on Feb. 12.

Carroll Steppin' Up
Since Jan. 4, junior Cris Carroll's offensive production has skyrocketed. Carroll averaged 13.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. During that span, Carroll has made 23 3-pointers for an average of 1.9 made per game. He also posted a career-high 24 points with three 3-pointers in the Penguins' 73-69 win over Green Bay on Jan. 19.
