Cote Wins Individual Title; Penguins Qualify Fifth at Mid-Winter Invitational

Jonesboro, Ark. — Youngstown State had a bowler finish as the individual champion at the Mid-Winter Invitational for the second straight season as Jade Cote claimed the top spot on Saturday at the Hijinx Family Entertainment Center.
Cote fired a five-game set of 1,201 to top the field by eight pins, and she helped the Penguins go 4-1 in their head-to-head matches on Saturday in traditional play. It was Cote's second career individual title, and she followed 2024 champion and current teammate Kirsten Moore.
The Penguins finished the 10 matches of qualifying in fifth place, and they can finish a high as third as the tournament shifts to bracket play on Sunday. YSU was third coming into the day, and Nebraska and Wichita State were able to jump the Penguins to make the top bracket. The Shockers had the highest round in the house with a 5,322, which allowed them to top the Penguins by 24 pins.
For Cote, she shot 790 over her first three games with scores of 255, 289 and 246 on her way to the 1,201 set. That was the third-highest five-game series in school history behind Moore's mark at the same tournament in 2024 and Cote's performance at the 2024 Northeast Classic. Cote finished with games of 213 and 198 to hold off Wichita State's Paige Wagner, who shot 289 in her fifth game. Cote beat the third-place bowler by 58 pins.
Youngstown State began the day with a 1,023-865 win over No. 13 McKendree behind Cote's 255 and Madison Doseck's 244, and Cote made a run at 300 in her second game. The senior from Farnham, Quebec, threw the front 10 but and left a wobbly 5-pin on her 11th attempt on lane 23. She settled for a 289, which ties for the second-highest individual game in school history. Her effort helped the Penguins beat No. 1 Nebraska 1,111-1,061.
YSU's lone loss of the day came in its third match as it fell 962-953 to No. 11 Louisiana Tech, and the Penguins rebounded to beat No. 9 Stephen F. Austin 971-847 and No. 17 UW-Whitewater 970-953.
After Cote, Doseck was YSU's next-highest finisher in 29th with a 1,019 set. Moore shot 944 to place 46th, and the Penguins rotated in other two spots in the lineup.
Youngstown State will begin bracket play against Arkansas State on Sunday at 9:10 a.m. Eastern.
