Last Time Out
The Penguins dropped a heartbreaking 14-13 overtime decision vs. Lindenwood in their season-opener last Friday, Feb. 6, at the Watson and Tressel Training Site in Youngstown.
YSU had a red-hot start in the first half, leading by as many as five goals on two separate occasions (7-2, 8-3). After leading 8-3 halfway through the second quarter, Lindenwood ended the first half on a 4-0 run, cutting the lead to 8-7 heading into halftime.
The second half was a game of runs, as YSU scored the first three goals of the third quarter to grow their lead back up to 11-7, before Lindenwood answered with three-straight goals of their own to cut the lead to 11-10 with 8:49 remaining in regulation. Two more Penguins goals, the latter by Katie Grottenthaler with 6:25 remaining in the fourth quarter to give YSU a 13-10 lead, would be the last of the night for the Penguins, as the Lions scored three goals in the final four minutes to tie the game at 13 and send it to overtime.
Lindenwood controlled the draw to begin the overtime period and wasted no time as Alissa DiGiacinto scored the game-winning goal just 10 seconds into the period, winning the game for the Lions, 14-13.
Sophomores Katie Grottenthaler and Brooke Peck led the way offensively for the Penguins, both setting new career-highs with four-goal performances. Grottenthaler also led YSU with four draw controls.
Junior Brooke Harper had seven saves in goal in her first appearance as a Penguin.
Freshmen Claire Baenziger and Tara McHugh had very strong collegiate debuts, as Baenziger netted three goals, and McHugh was tied for a team-high with three caused turnovers.
About Saint Francis

A Saint Francis goal from Julia Givens tied the game 4-4 with 3:59 remaining in the second quarter, but that was the last goal that the Red Flash would score. Akron would go on to shut out SFU in the second half, 7-0, to win the game 11-4.
Freshman Heather Delbone led Saint Francis as she netted her first two collegiate goals. Taylor Coughlin had 14 saves in the cage for SFU.

YSU drew first blood with a goal from Erin Clark to make the game 1-0 just 38 seconds into the first half, the Red Flash answered with a goal from Amanda Heidt with 11:03 left in the first quarter to tie the game 1-1, but that was the last time the game would be tied. YSU scored the last six goals of the first quarter to cling on to a 7-1 advantage, and they would score four goals in each of the next three quarters.
YSU had six different players find the back of the net, five of those players having multi-goal performances.
