Game Preview
The Penguins have played at home just once since Nov. 25 and just four times overall this season while getting off to a 9-4 start. Following Wednesday's game against Salem, a Division II institution located in Salem, W. Va., YSU will have three straight contests inside Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center against Horizon League opponents as the conference slate gets fully underway.
While the Penguins have moved in and out of Horizon League play in December, they've won three of their four conference contests with three of those victories coming on the road. Most recently, Youngstown State beat Cleveland State 70-63 on Monday to snap the Vikings' 13-game winning streak on its home floor. Cleveland State had lost just three times at home since the start of the 2022-23 season. The Penguins' largest deficit was four, and it took the lead for good following an 8-0 run that put them ahead 34-27 with 5:09 left in the third quarter. Paulina Hernandez, a Cleveland State transfer, scored a career-high 18 points in her return trip to the Wolstein Center, and Casey Santoro scored 12 of her 18 points in the second half. Sophia Gregory had eight points, seven rebounds and five assists in the second half after foul trouble limited her to six minutes in the first half. She helped the Penguins post 14 assists against just four turnovers against the Vikings' zone defense in the second half.
Santoro continues to lead the Penguins in scoring with 13.2 points per game from the point-guard position, and she has made nine 3s in the past two games. The other four starters — Gregory, Danielle Cameron, Sarah Baker and Erica King — average between 8.2 and 10.6 points per game as Youngstown State continues to showcase a balanced attack in its improved offense. Gregory, a Preseason First-Team All-Horizon League selection, is the only one in the group who started more than eight games last season.
A Win Over Salem Would...
- Give the Penguins a 10-4 record to start the season, which would be their best mark through 14 games since the 2021-22 team started 13-1.
- Give YSU a 2-0 all-time record against the Tigers.
- Extend YSU's winning streak against non-Division I opponents to 32 games.
- Improve YSU's home record to 4-1 this season.
- Allow Youngstown State to start 10-4 or better through 14 games for the seventh time in the last 13 seasons.
- Give head coach Melissa Jackson her 94th career win, her 22nd at Youngstown State, and her first career victory over Salem.
Milestone Watch
- Sophia Gregory is one point away from scoring 400 in her career. She also needs five blocks to reach 50.
- Casey Santoro is closing in on 300 career assists, needing 16.
