Grand Forks, N.D. — Youngstown State's women's basketball team used a 16-0 run in the third quarter and rallied to beat North Dakota 65-58 on Friday night at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center.
The Penguins trailed 32-25 at halftime, and North Dakota extended its lead to 40-27 after a 3-pointer by Mikayla Aumer at the 7:47 mark of the third quarter. Just over a minute later, Hayden Barrier scored five straight points to spark the 16-0 run that turned the game in YSU's favor.
The Penguins made six straight field goals and scored on seven consecutive trips down the floor, and they took the lead on a 3-pointer by Paulina Hernandez with 5:12 on the clock. Sophia Gregory's jumper with 4:36 left capped the run and flipped YSU's seven-point halftime deficit into a 49-45 lead.
North Dakota hit three straight 3-pointers to start the fourth quarter to take a 54-49 lead, but the Penguins held the Fighting Hawks without a field goal and to four points total over the final 8:53 of play.
YSU chipped away and took a 55-54 lead on a Sarah Baker jumper at the 4:30 mark, and North Dakota's final lead came on two free throws by Mackenzie Hughes with 3:51 left. Danielle Cameron's 3-pointer with 2:35 remaining put YSU up for good at 58-56, and Casey Santoro went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line in the final 30 seconds to seal the road victory.
Baker tied her career high with 16 points, Santoro added 13 points and nine rebounds, and Hernandez scored 11 points and made the first three 3-pointers of her career.
Walker Demers led North Dakota with 15 points, and Ava Miller finished with 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Youngstown State shot 50% in the third quarter and went 6-for-15 from beyond the arc in the second half. The Penguins were plus-eight in turnover margin and outscored the Fighting Hawks 23-13 off turnovers.
YSU will visit nationally ranked Michigan State on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
