Rochester, Mich. — Abbie Householder posted match highs of 18 kills and 19 digs, but Youngstown State's volleyball team fell 3-1 at Oakland on Saturday afternoon. The set scores from the OU Credit Union O'rena were 20-25, 25-18, 25-23, 25-23.
Youngstown State dropped to 12-13 overall and 7-7 in Horizon League play, while Oakland improved to 7-19 overall and matched the Penguins at 7-7 in the league standings.
The Penguins hit .486 in the opening set as they won 25-20, but they were limited to a .173 mark over the final three sets as the Golden Grizzlies rallied on their home court.
Ella Martin finished with 18 kills and Grace Cooney posted 17 kills on a .467 hitting percentage to lead Oakland.
Youngstown State scored seven straight points behind Kameron Blizniak's serve in the opening set to take a 14-8 lead, and the Penguins maintained an advantage of at least four the rest of the set. Gabriela Machin posted five kills on six attempts, while Householder contributed six in 12 tries.
The Penguins then held a 12-10 advantage in the second set, but Oakland went on a 7-1 burst to go up 16-13 on a Delaney Stern kill. YSU tied the score at 16, and the Golden Grizzlies closed the set on a 9-2 spurt.
A similar script played out in the third set as Youngstown State held a 16-11 lead before Oakland answered with an 8-0 run behind Molly Reck's serve. YSU tied the score at 19 and fought off two set points before the Golden Grizzlies prevailed 25-23.
The fourth set was tied 20-20, and the teams traded 3-0 runs to create another deadlock at 23. Martin's kills just inside the back line gave the Golden Grizzlies match point, and Ellen Zapp delivered a kill to finish the match.
Youngstown State will play its final four matches of the regular season at home, beginning with two contests against Cleveland State. The Penguins and Vikings will play at 6 p.m. on both Thursday and Friday at Zidian Family Arena at Beeghly Center.
