Rochester, Mich. — The Youngstown State volleyball team's five-match winning streak came to an end on Friday evening with a three-set loss at Oakland. The set scores from OU Credit Union O'rena were 25-23, 28-26, 25-22.
The Penguins entered the match having won 11 straight sets during their five-match streak, and Friday's contest was decided by a total of just seven points. Youngstown State's record dropped to 12-12 overall and 7-6 in Horizon League play, while Oakland improved to 6-19 overall and 6-7 in the league.
Abbie Householder led the Penguins offensively with 15 kills, while Layne Graffice and Gabriela Machin had 10. Householder and Graffice added 11 digs apiece to record double-doubles, and Maria Insana posted a match-high 16 digs.
Grace Cooney led Oakland with 14 kills, and Ella Martin finished with 13 kills on a .406 hitting percentage.
The Penguins led 16-9 in the opening set before Oakland used an 11-4 run to tie the score at 20. YSU held a 23-22 advantage, and the Golden Grizzlies scored the final three points of the set.
Youngstown State trailed 20-18 in the second set, but it went on a 6-2 burst to set up two set-point opportunities. A serving error and free ball on a serve receive allowed Oakland to tie the score at 24, and the Penguins also had set-point chances at 25-24 and 26-25 before the Golden Grizzlies prevailed 28-26.
Oakland went on a 5-0 run to take a 15-8 lead in the third, and YSU wasn't able to rally.
Youngstown State will look to split the weekend series with the Golden Grizzlies on Saturday at 2 p.m. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN+.
