Akron, Ohio – Three new meet records highlighted a very busy two days for the Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs at the Akron Zips Classic.
Friday Highlights:
- Hanna Held won the women's one-meter dive with a score of 242.20. Haley Conklin placed fifth with a score of 224.25.
- Ben Edwardson placed fourth in the men's three-meter dive with a score of 232.20.
- The Penguin men had two teams place in the top five of the 400-medley relay, including the event victory. The squad of Quinn Cynor, James Slessor, Lorenz Beck, and Jacob Gramer won with a time of 3:16.96, while the crew of Elliot Elmore, Adrian Andres Moreno, Valer Kennedy, and Noah Smith placed fourth with a time of 3:19.54.
- Olivia Sweetman finished runner-up in the women's 500 free with a time of 4:57.22. San Askin led the men during their 500 free with a third-place finish, clocking a time of 4:35.95.
- Quinn Cynor had a very strong showing in the men's 200 IM as he won the event with a time of 1:50.28, almost two seconds quicker than second place. Hannah Murray secured a runner-up finish in the women's 200 IM with a time of 2:04.31.
- YSU claimed three of the top five spots in the men's 50 free, led by Jacob Gramer's second-place finish in 20.54. Also placing in the top five was Noah Smith, who finished fourth with a time of 20.71, and Lorenz Beck, who finished fifth with a time of 20.76.
- In the 800-free relay, the men's squad of Quinn Cynor, Jacob Gramer, Noah Smith, and Lorenz Beck finished second with a time of 6:41.53, just under four-tenths of a second slower than the first-place time. On the women's side, the team of Hannah Murray, Owynn Lafollette, Jordan Sarubbi, and Olivia Sweetman finished fourth with a time of 7:39.28.
Saturday Highlights:
- The final day of competition was all about the relays for the Penguins. The men's 400-free relay team of Quinn Cynor, Jacob Gramer, Lorenz Beck, and Noah Smith finished first with a meet-record time of 2:58.60. The women's 400-free relay team of Hannah Murray, Orla Maccines, Chloe Moore, and Olivia Sweetman finished in fourth place with a collective time of 3:29.04.
- There were two Penguins squads in the top five of the men's 200-medley relay, as the group of Quinn Cynor, James Slessor, Jacob Gramer, and Noah Smith won the event with a meet-record time of 1:28.59, while the team consisting of Elliot Elmore, Adrian Andres Moreno, Valer Kennedy, and Lorenz Beck placed fifth with a time of 1:30.54.
- The Penguins logo was stamped all over the results of the men's 100 backstroke, as Quinn Cynor won the event with a meet-record time of 48.46, while Elliot Elmore finished third with a time of 49.54, and Pablo Santos finished fifth with a time of 50.56.
- Cynor also won the 200 backstroke event as well, swimming a time of 1:48.58. Pablo Santos placed third with a time of 1:50.75.
- Poyraz San Askin swam to victory in the men's 1650 free with a time of 15:44.40, nearly 10 seconds quicker than the second-place time. The Penguin women had two top-five placements in the 1650 free as Olivia Sweetman finished third with a time of 17:01.12 and Derin Donmez finished fourth with a time of 17:01.21.
- Both the men and women clocked top-five times in the 200-free relay. The men's squad of Lorenz Beck, Noah Smith, Jacob Gramer, and Quinn Cynor finished second with a time of 1:21.45, while the women's team of Madelyn Mahoney, Hannah Murray, Orla Macinnes, and Chloe Moore finished fifth with a time of 1:36.19.
- The Penguin men had two placements inside the top five in the 100 backstroke, as James Slessor finished runner-up with a time of 54.80, less than three-tenths of a second off the pace of first place, and Adrian Andres Moreno finished fourth with a time of 55.45.
- Both the men and women had two swimmers place inside the top-five in the 200 butterfly. The women were led by Orla Maccines, who finished second with a time of 2:03.13, while Allison Ramirez Romero finished fourth with a time of 2:04.17. The men were led by Valer Kennedy, who also finished runner-up clocking a time of 1:49.41. He was followed closely by Lorenz Beck, who finished in third place with a time of 1:50.64.
- Lorenz Beck finished third in the men's 100 butterfly with a time of 49.34. Orla Maccines led the YSU women with a sixth-place finish as she swam a time of 55.75, which is a program record.
- Jacob Gramer finished third in the men's 100 free with a time of 45.40.
- Hanna Held finished third in the women's three-meter dive, scoring 252.60.
- Zachary Lao placed fourth in the men's one-meter dive with a score of 243.65.
- Adrian Andres Moreno finished fourth in the men's 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:03.04, while James Slessor finished right behind Moreno in fifth, clocking a time of 2:03.25. Hannah Murray finished fifth in the women's 200 breaststroke event, swimming a time of 2:21.76.
- Beck also secured a fifth-place finish in the men's 200 free with a time of 1:41.39. Jordan Sarubbi placed sixth for the women with a time of 1:53.73.
- Trent Wakefield claimed a fifth-place finish in the men's 400 IM, clocking a time of 4:08.11.
- Hannah Murray finished sixth in the women's 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.41.
Team Scores
The Penguin men finished runner-up out of the four teams competing with a score of 938 points. Cleveland State finished ahead of the Penguins, totaling 1193.5 points.
The YSU women placed fourth out of the five women's teams competing, totaling a score of 618 points. Akron finished first with 1298 points.
