Penguins Return to Pool for Dual with IU Indianapolis

The Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs will return to the pool for the first competitive meet of the 2025 calendar year when they battle Horizon League foe IU Indianapolis in a two-day dual at the IU Natatorium this weekend.
Last Time Out
The Penguins will be competing for the first time as a team since they took part in the Magnus Cup Invitational at Busbey Natatorium in Cleveland, OH. on Nov. 21-23.
The Penguin men won three events during the meet, highlighted by Gavin Webb who took home victories in both the 500 free (4:27.46) and the 1650 free (15:35.52). His victorious time in the 1650 free was 10 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Jacob Gramer also had a very impressive victory for the men, as he won the 50 butterfly with a blazing time of 21.46, which set a new Magnus Cup record.
The men's squad also set two new program records in relay events. The 200-medley relay team of Elliot Elmore, James Slessor, Lorenz Beck, and Jacob Gramer set a new program record with a time of 1:29.06 as they finished fifth out of 34 teams in the event. Also, the 400-free relay squad of Lorenz Beck, Jacob Gramer, Darren Laing, and Gavin Redden set a new program-best mark as they swam a time of 2:57.91, good enough for a second-place finish.
The men finished in third place overall, totaling a score of 1,240 points. Cleveland State finished first in their home pool, totaling a score of 1,662 points.
Hanna Held continued her sensational season for the women as she captured a first-place finish in the platform diving event with a score of 221.25.
Also having an outstanding season herself, Oliwia Kaniak set two new program records for the women over the three-day meet. First, she broke the program record in the 100 breaststroke as she swam a time of 1:02.91. This time was good enough for a sixth-place finish. Kaniak also set a new program-best mark in the preliminary round of the 100 IM as she clocked a time of 57.14. She finished fifth in the finals later in the day.
The women finished in ninth place overall, totaling a score of 379.50. Akron finished in first place with a total of 1,728.50 points.
Scouting IU Indianapolis
The Jaguars come into this weekend's meet also with an eagerness to get back in the pool. The last time the Jaguars' men's and women's teams competed was when they hosted the House of Champions Invitational from Nov. 21-23. It was a packed field, as 13 total schools competed in the meet.
The IU Indy men's team took first out of 11 teams at the meet with a total of 1341.50 points. The women's team placed eighth out of 13 teams with 502.50 points.
On the season, the Jaguars' men's team has an unblemished record in duals, as they sit at 3-0 with wins against fellow Horizon League schools Green Bay, Milwaukee and Northern Kentucky.
The women's team is 4-2 on the season in duals. They are 2-1 against Horizon League schools, as they have defeated Northern Kentucky and Green Bay, but fell to Milwaukee.
#HLSD Accolades Refresh
Youngstown State's men's and women's swimming and diving teams have both been represented as part of the Horizon League's weekly awards throughout the season. Women's diver Hanna Held has been the main standout when it comes to weekly awards for the Penguins, as she has garnered Horizon League Women's Diver of the Week twice this season on Oct. 2 and Nov. 13. Also represented are Brooks Adams, who won Horizon League Men's Diver of the Week on Oct. 2, Oliwia Kaniak, who won Horizon League Women's Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 2, and Dominic Bono, who was named Horizon League Men's Swimmer of the Week on Oct. 16.

Up Next
The Penguins will stay in the state of Ohio next week as they will travel to Denison University for a dual with the Big Red on Sat. Jan. 18. The meet is set to begin at 12 p.m. at the Trumbull Aquatics Center in Granville, OH.
