New Castle, Del. — Youngstown State's bowling team went unbeaten again at the Northeast Classic on Saturday and will have an opportunity to compete for the tournament championship on Sunday. The three-day tournament is being held at Bowlerama in New Castle, Del., and Scared Heart is serving as the host.
YSU went 5-0 in its head-to-head Baker matches on Friday, and it matched the effort on Saturday with five wins in five traditional matches. The Penguins averaged 205.9 per game on Saturday, and their 5,147 total pinfall was the fifth-best in the field of 38 teams. Combined with Friday's Baker round, YSU is third after two days of qualifying and will open the championship bracket against Stephen F. Austin.
The Penguins beat No. 18 Maryland Eastern Shore 927-797 to open the traditional round, and they followed that with back-to-back scores over 1,100. YSU's best match score came in an 1,144-903 win over Bryant, and it shot 1,104 in a 284-pin victory over Adelphi. Youngstown State then beat No. 19 Merrimack 994-928 and Howard 978-882 to finish the round.
Jade Cote was YSU's top individual finisher, placing 14th with a 1,098 set. Madyson Marx finished 30th with a 1,053, and Madison Doseck was 52nd with a 1,014. YSU's six other bowlers all competed in the other two spots in the lineup, and Hannah Miller bowled a career-best 265 in the match against Adelphi.
Nebraska was the top qualifier by more than 300 pins, and Jacksonville State qualified second with 10,443 pins. That was eight pins higher than Youngstown State's total of 10,435 over the 10 matches of qualifying.
Sunday's best-of-seven Baker matches will begin at 8:25 a.m., and the Penguins' action will be streamed live on the YSUsports YouTube channel.
