Swimming and Diving to Host St. Bonaventure in Two-Day Dual to Open 2024-25 Season
The Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs are set to welcome St. Bonaventure to the Beeghly Natatorium to open up their 2024-25 season this Thursday and Friday.
Women's Preview
The Penguin women's swimming and diving team returns 24 members from last season's roster and has added eight newcomers to round out their 2024-25 roster.
Newcomers to the squad include Sydnie Collins, Morgan Glass, Avery Kleich, Brynn Kleich, Amelia Matzke, Olivia Sweetman, Maria Valcheva, and Lulu Wolff.
The women's team finished scored a program-best 474 points as they finished fourth at the Horizon League Championships last season, tying a program-best finish (also finished fourth in 2022-23). Now junior Miriam Frass became the first YSU women's swimmer to become a Horizon League Champion since 2013 as she took home a victory in the 400 IM, clocking a school-record time of 4:21.37. Frass also finished runner-up in the 500 free and 1650 free. The lady Penguins also scored a runner-up finish from Chiara Vetter in the 100 breaststroke, as she became just the second Penguin to finish runner-up since 2018.
The Penguins were selected fourth in the #HLWSD Preseason Poll.
Men's Preview
The Penguin men's roster boasts 28 returners from last season's team, while also adding nine newcomers to complete their 2024-25 roster.
Newcomers to the team include Poyraz San Askin, Lorenz Beck, Jameson Cooke, Elliot Elmore, Jacob Gramer, Andrew Miller, Jake Scalise, Reid Withey, and Ethan Woycehoski.
Like the women's the men's team matched a program-best finish at last season's Horizon League Championships, taking home a fourth-place finish after scoring 417 points overall. The men return fifth-year swimmer Gavin Webb, who returns after winning his third consecutive 1650 free title at last season's Horizon League Championships. The Penguin men also return talented diver Cody Thill, who finished fourth in the three-meter dive with a score of 303.55. His fourth-place finish is the highest Horizon League finish by a men's diver in program history.
