Charpie Announces Group of 18 Baseball Newcomers

Eighteen baseball student-athletes have each signed to continue their academic and baseball futures at Youngstown State University, YSU head coach Trevor Charpie announced on Wednesday.
The group of signees who will join the program this fall in preparation for the 2025 season are listed below.

The group of newcomers includes 14 transfers and four true freshmen. This incoming group of student-athletes will join five additional true freshmen on the roster who signed to join the program last fall (Caleb Hadley, Tyler Heflin, Will Nash, Hayden Scarmack and Jay Wrona).
Charpie on Newcomers: "On one side, these newcomers are student-athletes who we thought would make the team better. They are proven baseball players who will add depth and character to the team on and off the field. On the other side of the coin, they have demonstrated themselves to be competitors who are very grateful for an opportunity and the chance to become a Penguin."

Named Honorable Mention All-Jayhawk Conference… Made 10 starts and five relief appearances on the mound for the Thunderbirds during his junior campaign… Finished with a 5-3 record and a 5.09 ERA in 58.1 innings pitched… Struck out 69 batters while walking 25… Posted 10.65 K/9.
Northwest Missouri State: Played the first two years of his career at Division II Northwest Missouri State… Made eight relief appearances and three starts on the mound as a freshman in 2021… Finished with a 2-3 record and a 9.85 ERA in 28.1 innings pitched… Struck out 20 batters while walking 24… Made four starts on the mound as a sophomore in 2022 before suffering a season-ending injury… Finished with an 0-2 record and an 11.81 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched… Struck out 12 batters while walking 15.

Brayden Foster

Cole Smith

Lurleen B. Wallace Community College: Played his freshman season under legendary head coach Steve Helms at Lurleen B. Wallace Community College in Andalusia, Ala…. Played in 52 games and made 50 starts as a true freshman in 2022… Registered 37 hits, nine doubles, four home runs, 27 RBIs, 26 runs scored, 28 walks, a .378 on-base percentage and four stolen bases… Put together an eight-game hitting streak from March 4 through March 24.
High School: Helped lead Providence Christian to a 30-9 overall record and the Class 3A state championship in 2019… Batted .364 with 43 hits, 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 25 RBIs and 25 runs scored in 39 games played as a junior under head coach Casey Smith… Recorded three hits in each of the final two games in the best-of-three state championship series.

Jed Stange-Tregear

Cowley College: Played two seasons at Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kans…. Finished with a 2-0 record, a 4.07 ERA and two saves in 24.1 innings pitched over 18 appearances in his two seasons with the Tigers… Recorded a 3.18 ERA, one save and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched over three relief appearances and one start as a sophomore in 2022… Finished with a 2-0 record and a 4.34 ERA in 18.2 innings pitched over 14 relief appearances as a freshman in 2021… Struck out 24 batters while waking only seven during his freshman campaign… Registered multiple strikeouts in eight of his 14 appearances during the 2021 season.
High School: Played three years of baseball at St. James Academy in Lenexa, Kans…. Personal: Parents are Jeff and Janet… Has an older sister (Marilee)… Grandfather, Walter Tylicki, played basketball at Rockhurst College from 1961-64 and was a member of the 1964 NAIA National Championship team… Graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's degree in economics… Enrolled in the Master of Business Administration program at YSU.
