Charpie Adds Will Maddox, Dylan Moser to YSU Baseball Coaching Staff

Former collegiate and professional players Will Maddox and Dylan Moser have joined the Youngstown State baseball staff as assistant coaches, Head Coach Trevor Charpie announced on Wednesday.
Maddox, who will oversee YSU's defense and work closely with infielders, played three seasons collegiately at Tennessee before being selected by the Detroit Tigers in the 18th Round of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
"Will is a fierce competitor, his work ethic and dog mentality will be a great example for the players to follow," said Charpie. "Will's playing experience will allow him to prepare the players for anything that the game throws their way. He is a winner and is someone you do not want to see in the opposing dugout. I am extremely excited that he will be in ours."
Moser, who will serve as YSU's primary hitting coach and work closely with outfielders, most recently served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Ave Maria University in Florida during the 2024 season after a successful playing career.
"Dylan is one of the greatest hitting minds I have ever been around," said Charpie. "He has extensive knowledge in advanced data and metrics, but he can also coach with tremendous feel. I am highly confident that the development and growth mindset he will bring to our team will produce incredible results. I believe he will be in a big-league dugout very soon so I am thrilled that our players will get to learn from him."
Maddox played six seasons in the minor leagues, finishing his MiLB career with a .301 batting average, 481 hits, 62 doubles, 13 triples, nine home runs and 148 RBIs. The Gainesville, Ga., native played for the Erie SeaWolves, the Double-A affiliate of the Tigers, from 2017-19. Maddox also spent part of the 2019 season with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.
Maddox played in 160 games and made 157 starts during his three-year playing career at Tennessee. For his career, he batted .309 with 190 hits and 60 stolen bases. As a junior in 2014, Maddox batted .297 with six doubles, two triples, three home runs and 21 RBIs over 54 games played and 52 starts as an infielder. He also added 38 runs scored, 29 walks and 24 stolen bases during his junior campaign.
Maddox played in 51 of 52 games for the Vols, starting 46 at third base, four in left field and one in center field, as a sophomore in 2013. He batted .333 with eight doubles, two triples and 20 RBIs while also recording 42 runs scored, 21 walks, a .425 on-base percentage and 22 stolen bases during his sophomore season. Maddox earned SEC All-Freshman Team honors in 2012 after becoming just the third freshman since 1980 to lead Tennessee in batting average. He batted .297 with eight doubles, one triple, two home runs and 19 RBIs while playing in all 55 games and making 54 starts at second base. Maddox was also a member of the 2013 USA Baseball Collegiate Team.
Moser played professionally as an outfielder for the Salem Senators in the Mavericks Independent Baseball League from 2022-23. The Cedarburg, Wis., native batted .328 and slugged .489 with five doubles, eight triples, three home runs and 34 RBIs over 45 games played with the Senators in 2022. He also recorded 54 runs scored, 32 walks, a .422 on-base percentage and 13 stolen bases. Moser was a recipient of a 2022 Silver Slugger Award, and he was also selected as a Mid-Season All-Star.
Moser began his collegiate playing career at the junior college level with a standout two-year stint at Milwaukee Area Technical College in Wisconsin before playing for two different NAIA programs. Moser played two seasons at William Jessup in California before spending the fifth and final year of his career at Ave Maria. As a fifth-year senior in 2022, he batted .328 and slugged .454 with six doubles, three triples, one home run and 21 RBIs over 34 games played and 32 starts.
Moser played in 43 games over his two seasons at William Jessup. He batted .301 with 22 hits, 14 runs scored and 13 RBIs over 26 games played as a junior in 2020 before the season was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Moser played in 80 games over his two seasons at Milwaukee Area Technical College. As a sophomore in 2019, he led the Stormers in RBIs (29), walks (23) and stolen bases (14) while being named NJCAA All-Academic Third Team. Moser batted .347 and slugged .496 with seven doubles, four triples, and one home run and 26 runs scored during his sophomore season. As a freshman in 2018, he batted .305 and slugged .458 with 17 RBIs, 13 extra-base hits, 19 runs scored and 11 stolen bases over 39 games played.
