Homewood, Ill. – The Youngstown State men's tennis team picked up a 6-1 win over Chicago State on Sunday morning at the H-F Racquet and Fitness Center.
YSU improves to 8-9 on the season and 2-3 in Horizon League play while Cougars drop to 3-18 and 0-5.
It was the first contest between the two schools in Chicago since 2011.
The Penguins came out strong winning the doubles point. At No. 1, Onder Balci and Nishant Dabas collected a 6-3 win while at No. 3, Asier Pena Ibanez and Nathan Favier picked up a 6-4 win. YSU led 5-2 at No. 2 as well.
In singles, the Cougars picked up a straight set win at No. 1 while YSU won in straight sets at No. 2 and No. 3 and three sets at Nos. 4, 5 and 6.
At No. 2, Dabas picked up a 7-5 and 6-1 victory while at No. 3, Balci had a 6-3, 6-3 triumph. At No. 4, Harry Fouzas dropped his first set 6-4 before winning 6-2 and 6-3. At No. 5, David Alvarez Moreno earned a 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 win. At No. 6, Ibanez rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory.
The Penguins return home for key matches against Northern Kentucky (April 13) and IUPUI (April 14). The contest against the Jaguars is Senior Day for the Guins.
