Penguins Advance to Quarterfinals with 73-50 Win Over IUPUI

Youngstown – Senior Malia Magestro scored 15 of her 18 points in the second half to lead No. 7 Youngstown State to a 73-50 victory over No. 10 IUPUI on Tuesday in the first round of the 2024 Barbasol Horizon League Women's Basketball Championship.

The Penguins improve to 14-17 and advance to the quarterfinals to face No. 2 Green Bay on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Eastern in Green Bay, Wis. IUPUI ends the season with a 7-23 overall record.

Magestro went 6-for-7 from the floor in the second half and made both of her 3-pointers after halftime. Sophomore Abby Liber scored a career-high 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting off the bench, and junior Haley Thierry added 12 points.

The Penguins never trailed and was ahead for a total of 38:05, led by as many as 26 points and recorded 20 assists on 29 made field goals. YSU also forced 18 turnovers and scored 19 points off those IUPUI miscues.

The Penguins shot an impressive 51.7 percent (15-for-29) from the floor, including 50 percent from 3-point range, in the second half en route to tying the program's mark for most points in a Horizon League Tournament game.

YSU led 33-22 at halftime, and it used an explosive third quarter to push its lead to 19 points, 54-35.

Thierry scored YSU's first eight points of the game and helped the Penguins hold a 14-9 lead after the first quarter. Her third 3-pointer of the game pushed the Penguins' lead to eight points 27-19 at the 2:46 mark of the second quarter. After the Jaguars cut the YSU back to five, Kirby scored four straight YSU points and Saunders added a basket with three seconds left to give the Penguins a 33-22 halftime lead.

The Penguins went on a 15-1 run over a 2:29 span to turn a six-point lead, 37-31, into a 46-31 advantage. Paige Shy and Magestro each hit 3-pointers and Shy added two free throws to give the Penguins the 19-point lead after three quarters.

The fourth quarter was much like the third with the Penguins making five of their first nine shots, including a pair of 3-pointers, that helped YSU amass a 26-point lead at 64-40 with 4:33 left in the game.
