Penguins Prepped for Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational

The Youngstown State men's golf team will continue its spring schedule on Monday when it begins play in the two-day Don Benbow Butler Spring Invitational at Highland Golf & Country Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
The Penguins are coming off a 13th-place finish in the ECU Intercollegiate at Brook Valley Country Club in Greenville, N.C., on March 18-19 in their second tournament of the spring campaign. Jacob Sylak finished tied for 41st with a three-round score of 232 (80-77-75) to pace YSU individually.
The tournament field at the Don Benbow Bulter Spring Invitational will feature 12 other schools including Butler (host), Bradley, Cleveland State, DePaul, Detroit Mercy, Evansville, Green Bay, Indian Hills, IUPUI, Loyola Chicago, Oakland and Purdue Fort Wayne. In addition, Ball State, Indiana and Purdue will have individuals participating at the event.
The teams will play 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday in the two-day, 54-hole event. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. each day. The course will play approximately 6,551 yards and par is 70. Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament via Golf Genius using the ID code BENBOW24.
Head Coach Tony Joy has announced that YSU's lineup will feature Justin Atkinson, Sylak, Cole Christman, Dean Austalosh and Ryan Sam. In addition, Jimmy Graham will be competing as an individual for the Penguins.
Atkinson and Austalosh have competed in each of YSU's first seven tournaments during the 2023-24 season. Sylak has participated in six events, Sam has competed in five tournaments and Graham has seen action in two competitions.
The tournament is named in honor of the late Don Benbow, who was inducted into the Butler Athletics Hall of Fame for his contributions as a standout football student-athlete, golf and football coach, and his time at Butler as an athletics administrator.
