Penguins Sweep Season Series from Detroit Mercy

Youngstown, Ohio – The Youngstown State softball team completed the season sweep over Detroit Mercy with a 10-1 victory on Sunday afternoon at the YSU Softball Complex.

With the win, the Penguins improve to 14-10 overall and 3-0 in the Horizon League while the Titans fall to 1-20 overall and 0-3 in the league.

Conchetta Rinaldi went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in while Hailey Niederkohr went 2-for-2 with a pair of triples and four RBIs. Kennedy Dean and Sara Fessler each went 2-for-3.

Sophie Howell turned in another dominant outing in the circle throwing a complete-game one hitter with seven strikeouts.

Fessler tripled to right field to lead off the inning and scored on Jillian Jakse's ground out. Dean singled up the middle and scored from first on Rinaldi's double to left field to give the Penguins a 2-0 lead.

The Penguins tacked on five in the third and added three more in the fourth inning to enforce the mercy rule.

Pinch-hitter Autumn Behlke bases-loaded hit by pitch plated Lauryn Swanson, and Niederkohr's bases-clearing triple to left center field scored Ashlyn Bishop, Elyssa Imler and Rinaldi.

Macy Littler's ground out to shortstop scored Niederkohr to give the Penguins a 7-0 lead.

The Titans cut the deficit to 7-1 on a home run by Amanda Schick in the top of the fourth.

Youngstown State answered with three runs in the bottom half on a Rinaldi single that brought home Cassandra Carlson, a ground out by Imler that plated Dean, who doubled, and Niederkohr's second triple that pushed across Audrey Thomas.

Youngstown State hosts Bowling Green, Tuesday, March 19. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the YSU Softball Complex.
