Norfolk, Va. – The Youngstown State softball team dropped a hard-fought 3-2 decision to UNLV on Sunday morning at the NSU Softball Stadium.
With the loss, the Penguins fall to 10-8 overall.
Senior Hailey Niederkohr hit a solo home run in top of the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie and give the Penguins a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, UNLV's Jesse Farrell clubbed a two-run go-ahead home run to lift the Runnin' Rebels to the one-run victory.
The Penguins jumped in front scoring a run in the top of the first inning before UNLV knotted the game with a run in the bottom half of the frame.
Kennedy Dean and Lydia Wilkerson each went 2-for-3 for the Penguins.
Sophie Howell was the hard-luck loser allowing just three hits and striking out three.
Youngstown State hosts Akron in a doubleheader, Tuesday, March 12, in the 2024 home opener. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at the YSU Softball Complex.
