Youngstown State fifth-year senior Dena Jarrells has been named the Under Armour Horizon League Player of the Week for the period ending Feb. 25, the conference office announced on Monday.
Jarrells, a guard from Dunlow, W. Va., is a player of the week for the first time in her career that spans three seasons at Chattanooga and two seasons at Youngstown State.
Jarrells tied her career high with 25 points as she fueled YSU's comeback win at Northern Kentucky on Saturday. The Penguins trailed by as many as 18 in the first half before Jarrells caught fire by scoring all 25 of her points in the final 23 minutes of the game. She scored YSU's final eight points of the first half, and she added 10 points in the fourth quarter.
After a slow start in which she was 0-for-4 from the field with three turnovers in the first 17 minutes of the game, she was 9-for-14 from the field and had just one turnover.
The 25 points matched her previous career high from Feb. 21, 2023, at IUPUI, and it was the highest point total in a game this season by a Penguin. Jarrells also scored in double figures for the 50th time in her career, made her 200th career 3-pointer and grabbed her 250th career rebound in the contest. Her five 3s against the Norse allowed her to jump up to second in the Horizon League rankings with 2.1 3s per contest. She's also fourth in the league in assists per game, and she's seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio.
Jarrells and the Penguins have two regular season contests remaining in the 2023-24 schedule. They will host Cleveland State on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Beeghly Center, and they will conclude the regular season with a game at Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday at 3 p.m.
