Penguins Embark on CSCAA Open Water National Championships

Ten members of the Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs will make their way down to Florida International University this weekend as they will compete in the 2024 CSCAA Open Water National Championships in Biscayne Bay, Fla. on Sunday morning. This will be the seventh iteration of the event.
240 athletes from over 60 universities from around the country will compete in a 5K race in the Biscayne Bay.
Men's Preview
The men's race will feature 113 swimmers and is set to begin at 8 a.m.
The five Penguins men competing are Poyraz San Askin, Crispy Barton, David Grant, Gavin Webb, and Ethan Woycehoski.
Women's Preview
The women's race will feature 127 swimmers and is set to begin at 10 a.m.
The five Penguin women competing are Hailey Clark, Miriam Frass, Morgan Glass, Olivia Sweetman, and Macy Wang.
Last Time Out
Four Penguin male swimmers competed last weekend at the Toyota U.S. Open Championships, which were held in Greensboro, N.C.
Lorenz Beck and Jacob Gramer both competed in the 100 butterfly, finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
Gramer also competed in the 50 free, setting a new program record with a time of 20.20, which was good enough for a 15th-place finish in the event.
James Slessor also re-wrote the Penguin record book, setting new program records in two events. First up was the 100 breaststroke, where Slessor set a new program-low mark of 53.79 en route to a 10th-place finish. Slessor also set a new program record in the 200 breaststroke, as he swam a time of 1:59.20, which was also good enough for a finish in 10th place.
Poyraz San Askin competed in the 1650 free, where he finished with a time of 15:43.31.
Up Next
The Penguins will be back together as a full team when they return to the pool in January as they will head to Horizon League foe IU Indianapolis for a two-day meet on Jan. 10-11.
