Carbondale, Ill. – The Youngstown State football team suffered a 37-33 defeat to Southern Illinois on an overcast Saturday afternoon at Saluki Stadium in Carbondale.
The Penguins (3-8 overall and 2-5 in the MVFC) bolted out to a 28-0 lead, but the Salukis rallied for the home victory to improve to 3-7 and 1-5.
YSU built its four-touchdown lead behind three rushing scores by QB Beau Brungard and a short TD toss to Tyshon King to start the game.
On the first drive of the game, Brungard capped it off with a three-yard scamper around the left side to cap off a six-play, 66-yard drive.
Later in the quarter, Brungard scored on a 27-yard keeper to extend the lead to 14-0.
In the second quarter, Brungard's third score of the contest came on a 26-yard run as he tip-toed down the near sidelines to push the lead out to 21-0.
With 3:59 left before the intermission, Brungard found King on a three-yard scoring toss to make the lead 28-0.
SIU scored a pair of touchdowns late in the second half to get within 28-12 with 16 seconds remaining.
On the second score, SIU went for two, but Stephon Hall drilled SIU QB Jake Curry and Mike Wells scooped up the ball and raced for a defensive two-point score. That marks the first defensive two-point conversion in program history.
Leading 30-18, Andrew Lastovka kicked a 38-yard field goal giving the Guins a 33-18 lead late in the third quarter.
However, SIU scored 19 points in the fourth quarter for the come-from-behind victory.
The Guins drove to the SIU 17-yard line, but on the final play of the game, Brungard's pass was incomplete.
The Penguins had 478 yards while SIU finished with 488.
YSU had 297 yards of total offense in the first half with 161 through the air and 136 on the ground. SIU had 230 with 150 of those coming on the final two possessions of the quarter.
The Penguins conclude the season with a home game against UNI next Saturday at Stambaugh Stadium. Kickoff for the Senior Day contest against the Panthers is set for noon.
