Kenosha, Wis. — Youngstown State's bowling team earned two wins over top-four ranked opponents and posted the third-highest pinfall on Friday to open the SFA Ladyjack Classic. The three-day event is being held at Sheridan Lanes in Kenosha, Wis.
The Penguins beat top-ranked Jacksonville State 1,000-925 to open the morning, and they beat No. 4 Vanderbilt 971-913. Youngstown State, which is ranked third in the NTCA Top 25 poll, also beat No. 19 Valparaiso as they went 3-2 in head-to-head Baker matches on Friday.
For the entire day, YSU averaged 205.9 per game and registered a total pinfall of 5,147 over five Baker matches. YSU will need to remain in the top four after five more matches of qualifying on Saturday if it wants to compete in Sunday's championship bracket.
The Penguins had 10 strikes in a 271 game in their 75-pin win over Jax State to begin the morning, and they followed that with their highest set of the round in an 1,127-863 win over Valpo. The Penguins then struck 10 times in a 278 game against No. 7 Louisiana Tech, but the Lady Techsters had big scores in the third and fourth games to rally for a 1,088-1,059 win. YSU regrouped to beat the Commodores 971-913, and the Penguins' round ended with a 1,060-990 loss to No. 17 Wichita State.
Youngstown State will bowl against Maryville to begin Saturday's round of traditional play at 10:30 a.m. Eastern. The Penguins will also compete against Marian, Carthage, Oklahoma Christian and Newman on Saturday.
