
Multiple New Program Records Set at Magnus Cup Invitational

The Youngstown State men's and women's swimming and diving programs were part of a packed field of teams that competed at the three-day Magnus Cup Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State at Busbey Natatorium.
Thursday Events Finals Highlights:
Men:
- Gavin Webb won the 500 free as he swam a time of 4:27.46. Webb's time was two seconds quicker than the second-place finisher.
- The 200-free relay team of Rares Druga, Lorenz Beck, Jacob Gramer, and Darren Laing placed third as they combined for a time of 1:21.31.
- James Slessor placed third in the 50 breaststroke as he swam a time of 20.50.
- The 400-medley relay team of Elliot Elmore, James Slessor, Gramer, and Laing finished fourth with a time of 3:19.14.
- Jacob Gramer placed fifth in the 50 free, as he finished with a time of 20.28, which set a new program record.
- The Penguins were well-represented on the leaderboard in the one-meter dive event, as Cody Thill placed fifth with a score of 249.95, Zachary Lao finished in sixth place as he had a score of 242.65, and Brooks Adams finished in ninth place with a score of 229.80.
Women:
- Oliwia Kaniak placed sixth in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 29.04.
- Emma Schum finished 10th in the three-meter dive as her dives combined for a score of 191.30.
- Miriam Frass and Olivia Sweetman placed 12th and 13th in the 500 free, as Frass swam a time of 4:57.22 and Sweetman totaled a time of 4:59.53.
- The 200-free relay squad of Madelyn Mahoney, Chiara Vetter, Miriam Frass, and Oliwia Kaniak finished 15th out of 51 teams as they collectively swam a time of 1:36.35.
- The 400-medley relay team of Izzy Rossi, Kaniak, Allison Ramirez Romero, and Frass finished 18th out of 49 teams with a time of 3:54.46.
Friday Events Finals Highlights:
Men:
- Two different groups finished in the top 10 of the 800 free, as the crew of Gavin Webb, Gavin Redden, Darren Laing, and Lorenz Beck combined for a time of 6:43.85 to finish in second, and the squad of Soma Albert, Ales Zupanec, Terin Frodyma, and Ethan Woycehoski's time of 6:57.10 was good enough for a 10th-place finish.
- James Slessor placed third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 54.33, a time that broke his own program record.
- Four men placed in the top six in the 100 butterfly, as Lorenz Beck's time of 47.97 gave him a fourth-place finish, Jacob Gramer's time of 48.48 was good enough for a finish in fifth place, and Gavin Redden finished sixth as he swam a time of 48.58.
- The 200-medley relay team of Elliot Elmore, James Slessor, Lorenz Beck, and Jacob Gramer placed 5th out of 34 teams as they swam a collective time of 1:29.06, which set a new program record time for the event.
- Three fourth placed in the top 15 of the 400 IM, as Gavin Webb's time of 3:54.55 gave him a runner-up finish, Crispy Barton's time of 4:01.64 was good enough for a sixth-place finish, Dominic Bono finished ninth as he swam a time of 4:03.88, and Terin Frodyma finished 13th with a time of 4:04.35.
- The Penguins had two top-10 finishers in the three-meter dive, as Brooks Adams placed eighth with a score of 225.15, and Cody Thill finished 10th with a total score of 213.25.
- Lorenz Beck claimed a 10th-place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:41.48.
- Soma Albert swam to a 10th-place finish in the 100 backstroke with a time of 50.88.
Women:
- Hanna Held totaled a score of 242.30 in the one-meter dive, good enough for a fifth-place finish.
- Oliwia Kaniak swam very well in the 100 breaststroke, as her time of 1:02.91 gave her a sixth-place finish, and set a new program record.
- The 800-free relay squad of Kaniak, Hailey Clark, Miriam Frass, and Olivia Sweetman swam a time of 7:40.02 as they finished in eighth place. The crew of Madelyn Mahoney, Morgan Glass, Macy Wang, and Lulu Wolff finished 15th in the event with a time of 7:47.07.
- Miriam Frass placed 12th in the 400 IM as she swam a time of 4:31.09.
- Olivia Sweetman placed 19th in the 200 free with a time of 1:53.52.
Saturday Events Finals Highlights:
Men:
- Jacob Gramer set a new Magnus Cup Meet record in the 50 butterfly twice during the day, as he swam a time of 21.68 in the preliminary round, and then he won the event later in the day with a time of 21.46.
- Gavin Webb had an impressive victory in the 1650 free, as he won with a time of 15:35.52, which was 10 seconds faster than the second-place time. Crispy Barton finished ninth in the event with a time of 16:19.74.
- Four YSU men finished within the top 10 in the 100 IM. Ales Zupanec led the Penguins with a fourth-place finish, as he swam a time of 51.47. Isaac Johnson finished eighth with a time of 52.94, Dominic Panozzo placed ninth with a time of 53.02, and Elliot Elmore rounded out the top 10, finishing in 53.36.
- Simon Iwanonkiw finished second in the platform diving event with a score of 179.65.
- The Penguins had third-and-fourth place finishes in the 3x3-relay team diving event. The trio of Cody Thill, Brooks Adams, and Zachary Lao finished third with a time of 23:19.00, and the team of Simon Iwanonkiw, Jake Scalise, and Andrew Miller finished fourth with a time of 21:48.50.
- Soma Albert collected a fourth-place finish in the 200 backstroke as he swam a time of 1:49.42. Ethan Ferroni placed 10th in the event with a time of 1:53.05.
- James Slessor finished in fifth place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:03.00. Fellow Penguin Dominic Panozzo finished 10th in the event, swimming a time of 2:09.78.
- Elliot Elmore finished in sixth place in the 50 backstroke, totaling a time of 23.53. Ethan Ferroni finished 10th in the event with a time of 24.40.
- Lorenz Beck placed fifth in the 200 butterfly, finishing in 1:49.73.
- The 400-free relay squad of Lorenz Beck, Jacob Gramer, Darren Laing, and Gavin Redden finished in second place. The four swimmers combined for a time of 2:57.91.
Women:
- Oliwia Kaniak had a roaring start to the morning as she set a new program record in the 100 IM in the preliminary round with a time of 57.14. She finished fifth during the finals later in the day.
- Hanna Held placed first in the platform diving event with a score of 221.25. Dasha Toth placed seventh in the event for the Penguins, as she totaled a score of 168.30.
- The Penguins had three women place in the top 10 of the 1650 free. Hailey Clark was the runner-up in the event as she finished in 16:58.04, Olivia Sweetman finished fifth with a time of 17:06.20, and Morgan Glass was right behind her with a sixth-place finish, clocking a time of 17:07.57.
- The 3x3-relay team diving squad of Ellen Linscheid, Natalie Weissman, and Hanna Held placed third with a time of 2:42.85.
- Kaniak also finished in tenth place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:22.20.
- Allison Ramirez Romero finished in 12th place in the 200 butterfly as she swam a time of 2:04.66.
- The 400-free relay team of Oliwia Kaniak, Olivia Sweetman, Madelyn Mahoney, and Miriam Frass placed 15th with a collective time of 3:31.45.
The men finished in third place overall, totaling a score of 1,240 points. Cleveland State finished first in their home pool, totaling a score of 1,662 points.
The women finished in ninth place overall, totaling a score of 379.50. Akron finished in first place with a total of 1,728.50 points.
