Game Recap: Volleyball |

Green Bay’s Strong Serving Results in 3-0 Sweep

Green Bay used an aggressive serving approach to post 16 aces and sweep the Youngstown State volleyball team 3-0 on Friday at Beeghly Center. The set scores were 25-14, 25-17, 25-21.

Hannah Vanden Berg had seven of the Phoenix's 16 aces, and Abby Gardner notched four. Even when Green Bay's serves weren't resulting in aces, they were often keeping the Penguins out of system.

Abbie Householder had another solid offensive night for the Penguins, finishing with 10 kills in 29 attempts while hitting .276. YSU also got efficient contributions from its middles as Julia Sell and Dayan Malave combined for seven kills on 11 swings without an error.

Vanden Berg had three straight kills to spark a 12-4 run for Green Bay to close out the first set 25-14. The largest lead for either team in the early part of the second set was when Green Bay held a 2-0 lead, and Youngstown State matched that two-point lead at 12-10 on a Josi Borum kill. Vanden Berg had a kill when the Penguins misplayed a free ball, and that sparked a four-point run for the Phoenix. After that, YSU did not lead again the rest of the night.

YSU trailed just 18-16 after a kill by Sell, but Green Bay closed out the second set on a 7-1 burst. The Phoenix then took a 9-2 advantage in the third, and YSU got as close as 16-14 before Green Bay pulled ahead 24-17. YSU scored four straight points to force a timeout at 24-21, but a Penguins attack error ended the match.

Youngstown State will try to bounce back quickly, taking on Milwaukee on Saturday at 2 p.m.
