
Surratt Posts 17 Kills in Four-Set Loss to Mastodons

Fort Wayne, Ind. — Youngstown State's volleyball team had to settle for a series split at Purdue Fort Wayne after falling in four sets to the Mastodons on Saturday afternoon. The set scores were 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 25-13.
The Penguins matched the Mastodons in kills, but PFW committed nine fewer errors and had an edge at the service line. Purdue Fort Wayne had a 6-2 advantage in aces while committing five fewer serving errors, 14-9.
Kylie Surratt recorded a match-high 17 kills while hitting .295, and Layne Graffice posted 14 kills on a .265 clip. Wrigley Takats and Ava Stratton both finished with eight kills, and Abbie Householder added seven.
Riley Rosneck and Trinity Rye both had 15 kills to lead Purdue Fort Wayne, which improved to 11-8 overall and 5-1 in Horizon League play. Youngstown State is now 7-10 overall and 3-3 against conference opponents.
YSU's only lead in the opening set was 1-0 as Purdue Fort Wayne won 25-18, but the Penguins responded by scoring the first six points of the second set on their way to a 25-20 win. YSU had 16 kills without an error in 33 attempts, and four Penguins had at least three kills.
Youngstown State's deficit was 20-18 in the third set following a Householder kill, but the Mastodons scored four of the next five points to set up five set points. The Penguins fought off three of them as Graffice posted consecutive kills, but a kill by Rosneck finished the set and gave Purdue Fort Wayne a 25-22 win.
There were seven ties in the fourth set before PFW pulled away. The margin was 9-8 on a Takats kill, and the Mastodons closed the match on a 16-5 run.
Youngstown State will play two matches at Cleveland State next weekend. Friday's match at Woodling Gymnasium will start at 6 p.m., and Saturday's will begin at 2 p.m.
