Penguins Top Memphis in Five Sets for Second Straight Victory

Toledo, Ohio -- The Youngstown State volleyball team built a 2-0 lead and outlasted Memphis 15-13 in the fifth set to defeat the Tigers on Friday afternoon. The set scores at Toledo's Savage Arena were 26-24, 25-20, 20-25, 18-25, 15-13.

The Penguins, who beat Toledo in four sets on Thursday, have now won both of their matches at the Toledo Invitational. They will play Virginia Tech on Saturday at noon for the tournament title.

Jazmin Vergara was strong again for the Penguins with 15 kills and 18 digs, and Gabriela Machin had the best offensive match of her young career. The freshman right-side hitter recorded a career-high 14 kills on just 24 attempts, and she was in on three of YSU's seven blocks.

Josi Borum was one kill shy of another triple-double, finishing with 28 assists, 18 digs and nine kills. Isidora Sisic had all three of YSU's aces, and she paced the squad with 21 digs.

Reilly Briggs had a match-high 19 kills to lead Memphis. The Tigers had 22 more kills, but they also had 11 more attack errors and 10 more serving errors than the Penguins.

Youngstown State scored seven of the first eight points of the match, and it went on to take the opening set 26-24. Memphis fought back and took a 19-16 lead, but the Penguins answered with an 8-3 burst to take a 24-22 lead on consecutive Vergara kills. After the Tigers tied the set at 24, Vergara's sixth kill set up another set point opportunity, and Briggs had an attack error to give the Penguins the 26-24 win.

YSU never trailed in the second set, and its largest least came when Dayan Malave and Abbie Householder assisted on a block to make the score 12-5. Memphis charged again to tie the score at 20 to force a YSU timeout, but a foot fault by the Tigers after a timeout began a 5-0 Penguins run to close the set.

After hitting .110 combined in the first two sets, Memphis posted attack percentages of .263 and .366 over the next two to force a decisive fifth set.

The Penguins fell behind 2-0 in the fifth, but they scored the next four points behind Sisic's serve and did not trail again. The first two points of the run came on Machin kills, and she had four terminations in five attempts in the final set. Her final kill gave the Penguins a 13-11 lead, and Julia Sell followed with a solo block of Autumn Flynn to give YSU three match-point opportunities. Memphis fought off the first two to force a timeout, and Memphis' Abigail Schlueter served wide on the final point.
