Graffice’s Season Highs Not Enough in 3-1 Loss to USI

Columbus, Ohio — Youngstown State outside hitters Layne Graffice and Kylie Surratt recorded 17 kills apiece, but errors hurt the Penguins in a 3-1 loss to Southern Indiana on Friday afternoon at the Sports Imports Classic. The set scores from Ohio State's Covelli Center were 25-20, 25-23, 21-25, 25-18.
YSU had 22 attack errors, 10 of which came on USI blocks, 13 serving errors and three blocking errors in its loss to the Screaming Eagles. The Penguins hit at a .323 clip in the third set when they won 25-21, but they were held to a .122 hitting percentage in the three sets they lost.
Graffice set new season highs with 17 kills and 16 digs, and Surratt reached double figures in kills for the fifth time in the last seven matches with her 17 kills. Kameron Blizniak recorded 27 assists and 13 digs, and she matched Surratt with three aces. Youngstown State registered 10 aces as a team.
USI's top two hitters in the match were Ashby Willis and Carley Wright, who combined for 35 kills and just seven errors in 82 attempts. Willis added a match-high 22 digs to her 17 kills, and Wright had three blocks in the fourth set after Youngstown State extended the match with a 25-21 win in the third. USI also had three of its seven aces in the contest in the fourth set, two of which came from Willis.
Youngstown State will play two more matches at the Sports Imports Classic this weekend. On Saturday, the Penguins will take on Winthrop at 1 p.m. in another neutral-site match. YSU will then play the Buckeyes on Sunday at 2 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast live on B1G+.
