The Youngstown State baseball program has been recognized as a recipient of the American Baseball Coaches Association's Team Academic Excellence Award for the 2022-23 academic year, the organization announced on Wednesday.

The award honors high school and collegiate programs coached by ABCA members that post a grade point average (GPA) over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the current academic year. YSU was one of 120 NCAA Division I programs and one of three Horizon League members to be honored. The Penguins have now earned the impressive academic distinction each of the last six seasons.

YSU finished the 2022-23 academic year with a 3.37 cumulative GPA after posting a mark of 3.44 during the spring semester. The Penguins have now achieved a team GPA of above 3.0 for 12 straight semesters. The team had an impressive 24 players post a GPA of at least 3.5 during the spring.

In addition, Youngstown State had four players earn Horizon League All-Academic honors in 2023. Steven D'Eusanio, Ian Francis and Padraig O'Shaughnessy were each named to the 2023 Horizon League All-Academic Team while Braeden O'Shaughnessy was selected to the All-Academic Honorable Mention Team. YSU has had at least one player earn Horizon League All-Academic recognition in each of Dan Bertolini's first seven seasons as head coach.

Padraig O'Shaughnessy was also selected to the 2023 College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team to become just the third Penguin since 2013 to receive the prestigious honor for his combined performance on the field and in the classroom.
