The Youngstown State baseball team's 2023 season featured the program's longest winning streak in 18 years as well as various other team and individual accomplishments.
The Penguins played 55 games across 10 different states from mid-February to late May. YSU finished the campaign at 19-36 overall and 13-16 in Horizon League play. Highlights and key accomplishments from Dan Bertolini's seventh season as head coach are detailed below.
Penguins Put Together Longest Winning Streak Since 2005
- Youngstown State won eight straight games from April 25 to May 9 to put together its longest winning streak since the 2005 season. The Penguins won 12 of their final 16 games while earning four consecutive Horizon League series victories to close out the regular season.
- As a team, the Penguins batted .319 and slugged .545 with 24 doubles, 13 home runs, 70 RBIs and 42 walks over their eight-game winning streak. YSU's pitching staff posted a 4.75 ERA and a .238 opponent batting average over that eight-game stretch. The Guins scored at least eight runs in each of the first seven games of their winning streak.
- With 13 Horizon League wins in 2023, YSU has now posted double-digit Horizon League wins in three straight seasons for the first time in program history. With 10 road victories in 2023, Youngstown State has also recorded double-digit road wins in three straight seasons for the first time since 2005-07.
Penguins Tie Single-Game Team Home Runs Record
- Youngstown State tied the single-game school record with six home runs as a team in a 12-4 victory at Northern Kentucky on May 13. The Penguins scored their first eight runs in the game using the long ball.
- YSU hit six homers in a game for the third time in school history and for the first time since May 6, 2001, at Oakland. The Guins also hit six home runs at Cleveland State on May 8, 2000.
- YSU's six home runs at NKU tied for the single-game team high in the Horizon League in 2023. Oakland also hit six homers against Rochester University on April 10. The Penguins hit at least four home runs in a game on three different occasions this past season.
- Youngstown State belted 11 home runs over the final two games of its series at Northern Kentucky as it blasted five dingers in the 17-13 series-clinching victory on May 14.
Penguins Set New Single-Season School Record for Doubles
- Youngstown State set a new single-season school record with 123 doubles as a team in 2023. The previous record of 115 was set in 2010. The Penguins ranked 49th nationally in total doubles while ranking 31st in the country with 2.24 doubles per game.
- YSU also set a new single-season school record with 190 extra-base hits in 2023, surpassing the previous mark of 183 that was also set in 2010.
- In addition, YSU's 54 home runs as a team in 2023 rank as the second most in a season in program history behind the school record of 60 that was set in 2010. This past season marks just the fourth time in school history that the Penguins have hit at least 50 home runs – three of those occurrences have come during Bertolini's tenure as head coach. Furthermore, four of the program's five-highest home run totals have come in Bertolini's first seven seasons at the helm.
- The 2010 campaign is the only other season in school history where three different Penguins hit at least nine home runs in the same season. This past season marks the only campaign in YSU history that four different players hit at least eight homers.
- Youngstown State posted 330 RBIs and 360 runs scored as a team in 2023, each of which rank as the fourth most in a season in program history. The Penguins also recorded 230 walks, which ranks as the fifth most in a season in school history.
Success Against Power Five Opponents
- With two wins at Baylor in early March and a victory at Pitt on April 10, YSU has now earned five victories against Power Five opponents over the past two seasons. Youngstown State has collected nine Power Five victories over Bertolini's first seven seasons as head coach. YSU's 7-5 victory at Baylor on March 3 marked the program's first win over a Big 12 opponent since 2013.
- With a 9-4 victory at Pitt on April 10, the Penguins have now won three straight games over the Panthers in Pittsburgh. YSU also has five wins against Pitt in the last eight meetings between the two teams. The Penguins have a win over the Panthers in each of the last four seasons the programs have faced off.
Good Matches Single-Game Home Run Record
- Senior outfielder Andre Good tied the single-game school record with three home runs in a 17-13 victory at Northern Kentucky on May 14.
- Good hit three of YSU's five home runs in the game to become just the fourth player in school history to hit three homers in a game. He became the first Penguin to blast three dingers in a single contest since Lorenzo Arcuri at Morehead State on March 7, 2017.
- The Munhall, Pa., native finished the game 3-for-5 with three home runs while matching his career high with four RBIs. Good collected 12 total bases in the contest, which is tied for the third most in a game in school history. He posted the most single-game total bases by a Penguin since Arcuri matched the school record with 13 total bases at Morehead State on March 7, 2017. Good became just the fifth player in program history to record at least 12 total bases in a single game.
- Good was one of three players in the Horizon League to hit three home runs in a game in 2023. He belted a career-high nine home runs this past season after hitting eight over his first three seasons combined. Good ranks tied for 14th in program history with 17 career home runs.
- Good finished the season ranking ninth in the Horizon League with a team-high .528 slugging percentage.
Law Earns All-Region Honors After Breakout Season
- Redshirt junior shortstop Trey Law was named Second-Team All-Horizon League and to the ABCA/Rawlings East All-Region Second Team after a breakout season in 2023.
- The Camp Hill, Pa., native batted .362 and slugged .452 with 80 hits, 17 doubles, one home run, 29 RBIs, 24 walks, 50 runs scored and 10 stolen bases. He led the Horizon League with 80 hits while ranking second with a .362 batting average, fifth with 17 doubles and a .437 on-base percentage and sixth with 50 runs scored.
- Law's 80 hits are tied for the third most in a season in program history. He became the first Penguin to record at least 80 hits in a season since Jacke Healey had 83 in 2010. Law's 50 runs scored are tied for the eighth most in a single campaign in school history.
- Law hit safely in 43 of his final 49 games while putting together a career-best 15-game hitting streak from April 15 to May 18.
- Law's .362 batting average is the highest single-season mark by a Penguin since Frank Califano hit .362 in 2015.
- Law was named Horizon League Co-Batter of the Week on Feb. 28 after batting .556 and slugging .611 with 10 hits in 18 at bats over four games played at Memphis on Feb. 24-26. He also recorded one double, two RBIs, two runs scored, one walk, 11 total bases and a .579 on-base percentage. Law began the weekend by going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and a run scored in YSU's 6-2 victory in the series opener on Feb. 24. Law set a new career high with four hits by going 4-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored in the first game of a doubleheader on March 25.
O'Shaughnessy Named First-Team All-Horizon League
- Senior designated hitter Padraig O'Shaughnessy was named First-Team All-Horizon League in his sixth and final collegiate season in 2023. The Poland, Ohio, native became the first YSU player to earn all-league honors as a designated hitter since Jeremy Banks in 2012. O'Shaughnessy played in 166 games and made 148 starts for the Penguins over the last four seasons since transferring from Mercyhurst North East.
- O'Shaughnessy batted .274 and slugged .487 with 13 doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 36 walks and 53 RBIs in 2023. He led the Penguins in walks and RBIs while tying for the team lead in home runs. O'Shaughnessy tied for the league lead with six sacrifice flies while also ranking sixth with 53 RBIs and fifth with 36 walks.
- O'Shaughnessy's 53 RBIs are tied for the third most in a season in program history. He became just the second Penguin since 2010 to record at least 50 RBIs in a season. O'Shaughnessy's six sacrifice flies are tied for the second most in a season in school history while his 36 walks are tied for the seventh most in a single campaign.
- O'Shaughnessy finished his YSU career with 104 walks, which is tied for the third most in program history. He also ranks 14th in school history with 109 career RBIs and tied for 11th with 18 career home runs. In addition, O'Shaughnessy's 12 career sacrifice flies are tied for the fifth most in program history.
- O'Shaughnessy was named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for the third straight season in 2023 to become the fifth player in program history to be a three-time honoree. Additionally, he was named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team to become just the third Penguin since 2013 to earn the prestigious honor.
O'Shaughnessy Earns All-League Honors Again
- Senior third baseman Braeden O'Shaughnessy was named Second-Team All-Horizon League in 2023 after earning first-team honors as a second baseman in 2022. The Poland, Ohio, native batted .288 and slugged .486 with 15 doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 43 RBIs. O'Shaughnessy ranked ninth in the Horizon League with 15 doubles and 10th with 43 runs scored.
- O'Shaughnessy was named Horizon League Batter of the Week for the first time in his career on May 9. He batted .462 and slugged 1.000 with six hits including four doubles and a home run in 13 at bats while leading the Penguins to a three-game series sweep at Purdue Fort Wayne.
- O'Shaughnessy had his best game of the season in YSU's 18-3 victory over Oakland on March 16. He went 3-for-4 with a grand slam while setting new career highs with six RBIs and four runs scored. O'Shaughnessy became the first Penguin to drive in six runs in a game since Nick Caruso had six RBIs at Northern Kentucky on April 18, 2021. He also became the first Penguin to hit a grand slam since Dominick Bucko at Bellarmine on May 14, 2021.
- O'Shaughnessy ranks tied for 11th in program history with 18 career home runs and 17th with 100 career RBIs. The senior's .363 career batting average in Horizon League play ranks as the fourth-highest mark in school history. O'Shaughnessy also ranks 15th in program history with a .487 career slugging percentage. That represents the highest mark by a Penguin since Jacke Healey slugged .556 from 2009-10.
- O'Shaughnessy was named to the Horizon League All-Academic Honorable Mention Team for his combined performance on the field and in the classroom.
Perry Enjoys Strong Fifth-Year Senior Season
- Fifth-year senior right-hander Travis Perry enjoyed the best season of his accomplished career in 2023. Serving as YSU's Friday starter, he finished the season with a 5-7 record, a 4.79 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 73.1 innings pitched over 14 starts.
- Perry was named Horizon League Pitcher of the Week on Feb. 28 after allowing one run on two hits with a career-high 10 strikeouts over six innings to power the Penguins to a 6-2 series-opening victory at Memphis on Feb. 24. He was awarded the weekly honor for the third time in his career.
- Perry ranked fourth in the Horizon League with a .251 opponent batting average and seventh with five wins, a 4.79 ERA and 73.1 innings pitched.
- Perry earned his second win of the season in YSU's 18-3 victory over Oakland on March 16. The Oil City, Pa., native limited Oakland to one run on three hits in 6.2 innings while striking out six batters. He earned his third victory after allowing one unearned run and scattering five hits with six strikeouts over a season-high seven innings to lead YSU to a 2-1 victory in game one of a doubleheader at Milwaukee on March 24.
- Perry earned his fourth victory of the season by allowing just one unearned run and scattering seven hits over 6.1 innings in YSU's 11-2 victory over Milwaukee in game two of a doubleheader on April 29. He picked up his fifth win of the season on May 5 after allowing two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts over six innings in YSU's 9-4 series-opening victory at Purdue Fort Wayne.
- Perry finished his career ranking 10th in program history with 39 career starts, 11th with 234.1 career innings pitched and 16th with 181 career strikeouts.
D'Eusanio Concludes Accomplished Career
- Fifth-year senior infielder Steven D'Eusanio concluded his accomplished YSU career in 2023. The Willoughby, Ohio, native played in 209 games and made 184 starts over his five seasons as a Penguin. D'Eusanio finished his career ranking fourth in program history with 209 games played. He became the 11th player in YSU history to play in at least 200 career contests.
- This past season, D'Eusanio batted .296 and slugged .477 with 64 hits, 21 doubles, six home runs and 47 RBIs. He led the Horizon League and ranked 38th nationally with 21 doubles while also ranking eighth in the league with 47 RBIs.
- D'Eusanio hit safely in 30 of his final 40 games in 2023 after putting together a 12-game hitting streak from March 11 to April 2. He also reached base safely in 29 consecutive contests at one point.
- D'Eusanio's 21 doubles are tied for the third most in a season in program history. He became the first Penguin to record at least 21 doubles in a season since Todd Santore in 2001.
- In addition, D'Eusanio tied the single-game school record of three doubles on two occasions during the 2023 season. He doubled three times at Memphis on Feb. 24 to become just the second Penguin since 2010 to double three times in a single contest. He was the first YSU player to double three times in a game since his former teammate Blaze Glenn accomplished the feat in 2021.
- D'Eusanio finished his career ranking fourth in YSU history with 25 career home runs. He posted the most career home runs by a Penguin since Andrew Kendrick set the school record with 30 from 2016-18. D'Eusanio also finished his career ranking seventh in program history with 124 career RBIs. That is the most career RBIs for a Penguin since Jeremy Banks recorded 137 from 2009-12.
- D'Eusanio finished his career tied for ninth in program history with 298 career total bases. He also ranks tied for second in school history with 13 career sacrifice flies.
- D'Eusanio was named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for his combined performance on the field and in the classroom.
Grau Sets YSU Career Triples Record
- Senior outfielder Turner Grau set a new school record for career triples in 2023. With seven triples this past season, he now has 15 in his career to surpass the previous record of nine that had been held by Chris Durkin (1989-91) and Mark Thomas (1997-99).
- The Pittsburgh, Pa., native also tied the single-season school record of seven triples for the second time in his career. Grau's seven triples in 2021 and 2023 match the single-season program record that was set by Lou Vassalotti in 1994.
- Grau batted .272 and slugged .427 with nine doubles, seven triples, three home runs, 28 RBIs and a team-high 15 stolen bases. He led the Horizon League with seven triples while also ranking fourth with 15 stolen bases.
- In a loss to Pitt on April 4, Grau stole a career-high three bases to become the first Penguin in two years to swipe at least three bases in a game. He was the first Penguin to have a three-steal game since Phillip Glasser and Lucas Nasonti each had three against UIC on April 3, 2021.
- Grau matched his career high with four hits by going 4-for-5 with a double, a triple and three RBIs in YSU's 18-3 victory over Oakland on March 16. He put together a 12-game hitting streak from April 10 to May 5, and he hit safely in eight of his final nine games of the season.
- Grau played in 134 games and made 132 starts over his four seasons as a Penguin.
Thompson Named Horizon League Freshman of the Year
- True freshman second baseman Matt Thompson became the first player in YSU history to be named Horizon League Freshman of the Year in 2023. The only other time a YSU freshman earned a specialty award was when Mark Thomas was named Mid-Continent Conference Newcomer of the Year in 1997. Thompson was also selected to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team.
- Thompson played in 47 games and made 46 starts at second base in his debut collegiate campaign. The Wadsworth, Ohio, native batted .316 and slugged .439 with 54 hits, 10 doubles, one triple, three home runs and 28 RBIs. He ranked eighth in the Horizon League with a .316 batting average and a .421 on-base percentage.
- Thompson became just the seventh YSU freshman to bat at least .300 since YSU joined the Horizon League in 2002. He was the first YSU freshman to bat at least .300 since Jason Shirley hit .303 in 2012. Thompson batted .324 and slugged .480 with five doubles, three home runs and 20 RBIs in Horizon League play.
- Thompson's 54 hits in 2023 are the most by a YSU freshman since Shirley posted 59 hits during the 2012 season.
Freshmen Make Immediate Impact
- Youngstown State had 15 freshmen on its 2023 roster, and 11 of them played in at least one game during the campaign.
- True freshman left-hander Braden Gebhardt joined Thompson on the Horizon League All-Freshman Team. The Howland, Ohio, native posted a 3-3 record, a 6.29 ERA, one save and 54 strikeouts in 63 innings pitched over 21 appearances and nine starts. He ranked third on the team in both strikeouts and innings pitched in his debut season.
- Gebhardt's 54 strikeouts are the most by a YSU freshman since Collin Floyd had 58 in 2016. He became just the fourth YSU freshman to record at least 50 strikeouts since YSU joined the Horizon League in 2002. Gebhardt ranked seventh in the Horizon League with a .270 opponent batting average.
- True freshman left-hander Cam Marshalwitz made 17 appearances and eight starts on the mound while serving as YSU's Sunday starter for a majority of the season. True freshman right-hander Brandin Anderson ranked fourth on the team with 23 appearances, 21 of which came out of the bullpen. True freshman right-hander Aidan English logged 24 innings over eight appearances and six starts. He did not allow a hit over three innings of relief in just his second collegiate appearance to earn the win in YSU's 7-5 win at Baylor on March 4.
- Redshirt freshman right-hander Zach Stayduhar made 17 appearances out of the bullpen while redshirt freshman right-hander Trey Pancake made three relief appearances.
- True freshman Clay Wiesen played in 25 games while making nine starts at second base, three in left field and two at shortstop. He delivered a crucial two-out, two-run pinch-hit single in the ninth inning of YSU's 7-5 victory at Baylor on March 3.
- Redshirt freshman catcher Jack Johnson played in 13 games and made five starts behind the plate while redshirt freshman infielder Vince D'Eusanio appeared in nine contests. True freshman catcher Carter Kocik played in six games and made one start behind the plate. He doubled in his first collegiate at bat in the second game of a doubleheader at Oakland on April 20.
Offense Explodes in Home-Opening Victory Over Oakland
- Youngstown State won its 2023 home and Horizon League opener with an 18-3 victory over Oakland at Eastwood Field on March 16. YSU set season highs with 18 runs and 21 hits while winning its league opener for the third straight season. The Penguins also won their home opener for the second time in the last three seasons.
- The Guins recorded at least 18 runs and 21 hits for the first time since posting 22 runs and 21 hits in a 22-6 victory over St. Bonaventure on March 21, 2021. YSU's 21 hits are tied for the sixth most in a game in program history.
- Eight different Penguins had hits, and six of them had at least three hits. Grau went 4-for-5 with three RBIs, and Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 3-for-4 with a grand slam while driving in six runs and scoring four times. Law, D'Eusanio, Good and Eddie Saucedo also had three hits apiece in the dominating victory.
- The Penguins have won their Horizon League opener in three straight seasons for the first time in program history. The only other time that YSU won its league opener in two straight seasons was 2009-10.
Marshalwitz Anchors Bullpen
- Senior right-hander Casey Marshalwitz served as a key piece of YSU's bullpen once again in 2023. After making 29 relief appearances in 2022, Marshalwitz made a career-high 30 appearances out of the bullpen this past season.
- Marshalwitz's 30 appearances are tied for the second most in a season in program history. The Gibsonia, Pa., native made the most pitching appearances by a Penguin since Kevin McCulloh set the single-season school record with 32 appearances in 2012.
- Marshalwitz became just the third player in YSU history to make at least 30 appearances on the mound in a single season. He currently ranks 20th in school history with 64 career appearances.
- Marshalwitz's six saves in 2023 are tied for the sixth most in a season in program history. The senior's six saves also ranked second in the Horizon League. Marshalwitz earned a save in three straight games from April 25-April 30. He also saved back-to-back YSU wins on May 19-20.
