The Youngstown State baseball team won its seventh straight game and completed the series sweep of Purdue Fort Wayne with a 14-10 victory on Sunday at Mastodon Field in Fort Wayne, Ind.
The Penguins scored once in the first inning, eight times in the second and three times in the third to build a 12-0 lead after three frames. YSU added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings and held on for its second consecutive Horizon League series sweep. The Guins have put together a seven-game winning streak for the first time since winning eight straight contests during the 2005 season.
Youngstown State improves to 14-32 overall and 9-14 in Horizon League play while Purdue Fort Wayne falls to 10-38 overall and 6-18 in league action.
Braeden O'Shaughnessy went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, three RBIs and three runs scored to pace the Penguins offensively. Steven D'Eusanio and RJ Sherwood each went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored while Padraig O'Shaughnessy and Matt Thompson drove in two runs apiece.
YSU starter Cam Marshalwitz allowed two runs on three hits over five innings to earn his second win of the season. The freshman left-hander retired the side in order in the first and fourth innings as he permitted just one hit over the first four frames.
Brandin Anderson was responsible for five runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of relief before Will Shaffer came on to surrender three runs on three hits in 2.1 innings. Shaffer retired the side in order in the eighth after recording the final two outs in the seventh. Kenny Misik came on to record the game-ending strikeout in the bottom of the ninth.
The Penguins jumped in front 1-0 in the top of the first inning when Braeden O'Shaughnessy belted his sixth home run of the season.
YSU extended its lead to 9-0 with eight runs on four hits in the top of the second inning. Andre Good was hit by a pitch in between walks by Thompson and Ian Francis to load the bases with one out. Sherwood then delivered a two-run double down the left field line that plated Thompson and Good. After Trey Law reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases again, Braeden O'Shaughnessy drew a bases-loaded walk to put the Penguins ahead 4-0. Padraig O'Shaughnessy followed with a two-run single to center field to give YSU a six-run advantage. D'Eusanio recorded an RBI double and Thompson added a two-run single to give the Guins a nine-run cushion.
Youngstown State pushed its lead to 12-0 with three runs on four hits in the top of the third inning. Sherwood reached with a one-out single, Law followed with an RBI double and Braeden O'Shaughnessy brought home Law with an RBI double of his own. D'Eusanio tacked on a two-out RBI single that scored O'Shaughnessy for YSU's 12th run of the contest.
The Mastodons got on the board with two runs on two hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Eli Tencza hit a leadoff single, stole second, advanced to third on a single by Dylan Stewart and scored on a wild pitch. Stewart scored on a sacrifice fly from Jacob Walker later in the frame to cut YSU's lead to 12-2.
The Penguins took a 13-2 edge in the top of the sixth inning when D'Eusanio drew a leadoff walk and came around to score on an error. YSU scored another unearned run in the top of the seventh when pinch hitter Joe Suarez hit a two-out single and came around to score on an error.
Purdue Fort Wayne shaved YSU's lead to 14-7 with five runs on three hits in the home half of the seventh inning. Cade Nelis started the inning with a solo home run and Braeden Blackford hit a two-run blast after a walk. Colton Shirley delivered an RBI single and another scored when Luke Miles reached on a fielder's choice.
The Mastodons scored three runs on three hits in the bottom of the ninth to account for the final score of 14-10. Shirley and Miles hit back-to-back RBI doubles before an RBI single by Brooks Sailors.
Purdue Fort Wayne starter Jacob Myer suffered the loss after allowing eight runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Youngstown State will go for its eighth straight victory on Tuesday when it hosts Bowling Green in a non-conference contest. First pitch at Eastwood Field is slated for 5 p.m.
