The Youngstown State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is pleased to announce The Bob and Linda Mansfield Scholarship to enhance the YSU Athletics Scholarship Endowment Fund.
This scholarship was created in 2023 by former YSU student-athletes that Bob and Linda Mansfield have impacted over their years of involvement with the University.
Bob and Linda Mansfield were integral in the mentoring and development of many past YSU student-athletes and staff. He was part of the Athletic Academic Advisory staff at YSU for a number of years and spent over 25 years in the Youngstown City Schools as a teacher and administrator. He graduated from YSU in 1969. She is currently the principal at Pleasant Grove Elementary and held many roles throughout the educational community. It is clear how many important being a servant leader is to the Mansfield's.
They continue to be instrumental in the growth and development of Youngstown State Athletes and the youth within the Youngstown community. Their dedication, friendship, humor, and inspiration are a true difference maker to all. Throughout the years the Mansfield's have given many players support and mentorship. We now have created an opportunity for former players to give back to the program in honor of Bob and Linda Mansfield's stewardship to continue the tradition of supporting the YSU athletics family.
A former YSU student-athlete said: "Bob and Linda have been a figure around YSU for many years and it is great to see the scholarship endowment has been given in their names. The impact they have had in many of our lives during our times at YSU and beyond is why we are all proud to say we are part of the YSU family and Youngstown community. No matter where you go across the country it's people like them that help mold the next generation."
This scholarship will be awarded to a student-athlete on the football team with a preference given to an Education major.
Paul McFadden, President of the YSU Foundation, said the Mansfield's made a huge impact at YSU and the fact that former student-athletes have endowed a scholarship in their honor represents that.
"The influence the Manfield's had on the lives of so many people is very special," McFadden said. "They have given numerous resources to make sure that members of the Youngstown community and here at YSU were on the right educational path. The support and counseling they provided through the years, played a large role in the academic success of many students."
